About the area

College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools, including Heads of School, academic staff and research students. The team is committed to providing effective and efficient services in support of the Schools’ and University’s strategic objectives, with a focus on continuous improvement and best practice.

Technical Services provides discipline specific, applied knowledge and skill sets to support UWA’s teaching and research goals in unison with our academic staff. This team of practitioners is focused on high performance outcomes, compliance and contributing to a pragmatic safety culture via the implementation of safe systems of work. The team operates across a broad portfolio including teaching, fieldwork support, laboratory management, instrument/equipment stewardship, research training/design/optimisation and analysis, program coordination, and workshop design, manufacture and repair.

This team supports disciplines within the Natural, Agricultural, and Social Sciences, enhancing learning and research both on campus and in the field. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a collaborative team that plays a vital part in delivering real-world learning experiences and innovative research.

About the opportunity

  • Deliver high-level, discipline-specific technical support for practical teaching in laboratory and fieldwork settings, with a focus on geosciences.
  • Provide training and technical expertise in specialist equipment and procedures, ensuring optimal safety and compliance in all operations.
  • Support the maintenance, servicing, and procurement of equipment and consumables for practical teaching, adhering to relevant policies and guidelines.

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in geoscience with demonstrated skills in microscopy and fieldwork support.
  • Proven ability to provide technical support in teaching and research settings, including microscopy, equipment setup, maintenance, and management. Experience in tertiary or secondary education is an advantage.
  • Experience in scientific fieldwork, including the ability to assist with regional travel, remote work, and camping-based activities.
  • Physically fit and capable of manual tasks such as lifting, carrying, and handling equipment for field and lab activities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Special Requirement(s):

  • Current “C” class manual driver’s licence.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to operate 4WD and Light Rigid (LR) passenger vehicles is desirable.
  • Some after-hours work may be required, including overnight fieldwork
