An exciting opportunity has emerged at the Shire of Merredin for a suitably qualified Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to join our team. This role will sit within the Strategy & Community Directorate and will support the Executive Manager Strategy & Community (EMSC) to achieve strategic outcomes relative to the department.
The EHO will undertake activities which relate to the Shire’s delivery of Health, Building, Planning, Environmental and Waste Management Services. They will provide professional assistance, information, advice and reports to the Executive Manager Strategy & Community, staff and the public in relation to the Shire’s Environmental Health statutory functions, programs and projects in the Shire of Merredin. The position also involves a limited level of involvement in Building and Town Planning activities and applications.

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge and understanding of local government regulations, local laws and policies. They will have experience in the delivery of Environmental Health Services and will also have a sound knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety and Risk Management in this field.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver environmental health services in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations and standards, supporting the Shire of Merredin’s Health, Building, Planning, Environmental and Waste Management functions.
Provide professional advice, information and reports to the Executive Manager Strategy & Community, internal teams, and the public regarding the Shire’s environmental health programs, projects and statutory responsibilities.
Conduct inspections and audits of premises, processes, equipment and hazardous substances to ensure public health and safety and compliance with statutory requirements.
Prepare, implement and review environmental health and workplace health and safety management plans, ensuring they align with community and organisational needs.
Support environmental initiatives, including waste management planning and strategies for the safe, effective disposal of commercial, industrial, medical and household waste.
Monitor and enforce legislation and deliver prevention programs related to food safety, communicable diseases, water quality, wastewater treatment, and pollution control.
Assess plans and specifications of buildings to be erected within the district with regards to the requirements of the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911, and all Regulations and Local Laws relating to public health.
Investigate public health complaints and incidents, document findings, and prepare reports outlining outcomes and any necessary enforcement actions.
Promote safe work practices by delivering staff training on personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard identification and control, and safe operating procedures.
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge and understanding of local government regulations, local laws and policies. They will have experience in the delivery of Environmental Health Services and will also have a sound knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety and Risk Management in this field. They will also possess the following:
Experience - At least three (3) years' of relevant experience.
Qualifications – At least a Bachelor degree (AQF 7) qualification; however, in some cases we will consider experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
Skills – Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and reviewing environmental health policies, programs and strategies aimed at improving public health outcomes, as well as overseeing compliance with environmental health legislation.
