Our client, a respected independent statutory authority of the Australian Federal Government, is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Director - Finance, Program Support to lead key financial functions for major strategic programs. This position is based in Canberra and plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality financial reporting and advice in a fast-paced, dynamic public sector environment.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to nationally significant work, collaborating closely with senior stakeholders and playing an instrumental role in delivering robust financial oversight and strategic planning across complex programs of work.

The Role

As Assistant Director - Finance, you will support the Finance Lead and Program Support Director to manage a small team of finance professionals, providing a full range of financial management services across major programs and corporate support functions.

Key responsibilities include:

Delivering accurate and timely financial reporting, analysis and forecasting

Preparing complex briefings, reports and correspondence for internal and external stakeholders

Supporting budget planning and management activities

Advising senior executives on financial matters and risks

Driving process improvements and policy development for financial operations

Key Requirements

Essential:

Demonstrated experience managing complex financial functions in a government or large-scale organisational context

Strong leadership capabilities, including team coordination and upward management

Proven ability to deliver high-quality written communications (briefings, reports, correspondence) under tight deadlines

Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, including financial modelling and forecasting

Excellent stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills

Desirable:

Experience in providing financial advice and reporting to senior executives

Proficiency in managing and analysing large financial datasets

Understanding of asset management and financial accounting practices

Experience in preparing Federal Government budget bids and costings

Relevant tertiary qualifications; CPA or CA (or working towards) highly regarded
