This Position:
As Shop Manager in a bookshop you will oversee all aspects of the store's operations, including staff management, inventory control, sales targets, customer service, and ensuring the store runs efficiently and profitably.

Role Duties and Responsibilities
Duty
Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
Leadership and Management:
Oversee daily operations of the bookshop, ensuring smooth and efficient functioning.
Lead, motivate, and manage store staff, fostering a positive work environment.
Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions.
Customer Service Excellence:
Ensure high standards of customer service are consistently met.
Handle complex customer inquiries, complaints, and issues effectively.
Develop and implement customer service policies and procedures.
Sales and Merchandising:
Operating the cash register, handling cash, credit card payments, and providing receipts.
Develop and execute strategies to achieve sales targets and maximize profitability.
Plan and oversee merchandising and promotional activities.
Monitor sales performance and implement improvements.
Inventory and Stock Control:
Manage inventory levels to ensure optimal stock availability.
Oversee receiving, unpacking, and stocking of merchandise.
Conduct regular inventory audits and manage stock discrepancies.
Oversee returns process, including picking, packing and shipping books to suppliers and reconciling credit notes.
Financial Management:
Prepare and manage the store’s budget.
Analyse financial reports and ensure financial targets are met.
Ensure accurate cash handling and financial reporting.
Store Operations:
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe store environment.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and security regulations.
Oversee maintenance and upkeep of store facilities and equipment.
Marketing and Community Engagement:
Develop and implement marketing strategies and community outreach programs.
Organise and participate in store events, book signings, and author visits.
Build and maintain relationships with local schools, libraries, and community groups.
· Achievement of sales and profitability targets.
· Customer satisfaction and feedback scores.
· Staff performance, retention rates, and team morale.
· Accuracy and efficiency of inventory management.
· Effectiveness of merchandising and promotional activities.

Qualifications, Competencies & Experience
Essential
· Minimum of 5 years of experience in a retail environment, with at least 2 years in a management role.
· Proven leadership and team management skills.
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
· Strong proficiency in using retail management software and point-of-sale (POS) systems.
· Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred
· Previous experience in a bookshop or related industry.
· A passion for books and a broad knowledge of literature.
· Experience with inventory management systems and supply chain logistics.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Collins Booksellers commenced operations in 1922 as a newsagency at 622 Collins Street Melbourne. Founded by Frederick Henry (Harry) Slamen it was registered in 1929 as a Proprietary Limited Company under the name Collins Book Depot when it opened two new branches at 95 Elizabeth Street and 361 Swanston Street in Melbourne.
