The Role

This position:

  • Undertakes complex contract management and contract administration work, provides advice and assistance on complex policy, procurement and contract management issues, assists in the development of procurement documentation and is at the front line of engagement with stakeholders.
  • Is accountable to undertake complex to very complex contract management activities and implement procurement activities that comply with legislative and policy frameworks.
  • Works within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defences mission and business objectives.
  • Is accountable to plan, lead and manage a range of resources to achieve business objectives.
  • Takes initiative for achieving outcomes, progressing work, reviewing team and business performance and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Sets work tasks that align with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
  • Has people management responsibility and is required to exercise people management skills/knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team

The Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) will be one of the most advanced warships in the world with cutting edge technology and capabilities. As Australia’s largest shipbuilding project, HCF provides the foundation for Continuous Naval Shipbuilding in Australia. We are working with experts from the UK, USA, Canada and Europe to provide six frigates optimised for anti-submarine warfare to the Royal Australian Navy. The frigates are being constructed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard, South Australia utilising the latest production technologies. You will have access to generous working conditions as an Australian Public Servant in Defence. You will be supported in balancing work life with family and other priorities, with a variety of flexible working arrangements available. Information on Defence employees’ working conditions, including an attractive remuneration package with a generous superannuation contribution (15.4%), can be sourced from the Defence Enterprise Agreement.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate would have proven contract management and procurement experience, the ability to leverage your diverse complex management skill sets and experience to help deliver the Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) acquisition strategy and be able to:

  • Develop and implement work plans, set performance indicators and review individual, team and business performance, focussing on identifying opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate sound leadership to bring out the best in and motivate a small but high performing team.
  • Exercise a considerable degree of independence and use sound decision-making and judgement to provide expert commercial and contracting advice and commercial solutions.
  • Demonstrate your ability to build, maintain and influence key stakeholders in order to achieve effective strategic outcomes.
  • Implement and manage a variety of business and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrate superior analytical skills, with motivation to be innovative, and challenge traditional ways of conducting business.
  • Be passionate about ongoing self-improvement, and professional development for your staff.
