Location: 51 Elizabeth St, Bayswater Vic 3153

Hours: 2.5 hours per class, currently Tuesday 5pm to 7.30pm during school terms, plus agreed preparation time. There may be opportunities for extra hours occasionally, covering leave for the Bentleigh campus on Monday evening.

The TSA’s German Language School (GLS) was established in 1952 and is an accredited Community Languages Victoria (CLV) School. CLV Schools are child safe environments.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The TSA’s German Language School (GLS) was established in 1952 and is an accredited Community Languages Victoria (CLV) School.

Our School actively promotes the safety and wellbeing of all students, and all School staff and volunteers are committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in the School environment, in accordance with their legal obligations including the Child Safe Standards. Our School’s Child Safety Policy and Code of Conduct are available on our School website or on request.

Each classroom will have a minimum of two instructors present at all times, who will work in tandem to deliver the class.

The position of GLS Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging German language lessons in a supportive and culturally rich environment to school-aged children in after-hours classes. This role fosters students' language learning while encouraging their appreciation of the associated culture; and is in line with the School’s Child Safety policy and procedures.

ABOUT YOU

You’re fluent in German, passionate about language education and understand second-language acquisition. You’re confident in managing classrooms, skilled in engaging diverse learners and committed to student safety and wellbeing. You work well in a team situation and bring energy, fun and passion to the role. A current WWCC is required. Teaching qualifications or equivalent experience are highly desirable.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Proficiency in German language (spoken and written) and familiarity with its culture.

Understanding of second-language learning and teaching.

Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lesson Planning and Delivery

Develop and implement age-appropriate, engaging, and inclusive language lessons.

Use diverse teaching methodologies to support students with varying language proficiency levels.

Integrate cultural content to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of the language.

2. Classroom Management

Maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.

Manage classroom behaviour effectively, ensuring all students feel safe and supported.

Instructors Support each other in managing the classroom.

3. Child Safety and Compliance

Undertake 3 hours of on-line mandatory Child Safe training.

Ensure a child-safe learning and teaching environment.

Read and sign the Child Safety Code of Conduct

4. Student Assessment and Reporting

Assess and monitor student progress.

Provide regular feedback to students and parents on progress and areas for improvement.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and other relevant documentation.

5. Collaboration and Communication

Work collaboratively with other teachers, staff and the leadership team.

Communicate effectively with parents and guardians about their child’s learning and participation.

6. Professional Development

Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.

Attendance at the annual CLV Schools Conference.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The GLS Instructor must hold a current Working with Children’s Check (WWCC) and shall be able to demonstrate relevant competence and experience for the key responsibilities listed above. Tertiary qualification in teaching, German language and culture, first aid, Child Safety or equivalent experience would be desirable.
