The Onset

“What if your code didn’t just run on a device... it lived inside one?”
We’re building implantable medical devices that listen to the body and respond in real time, changing lives by treating chronic pain with unprecedented precision. This isn’t theoretical. It’s already in the hands (and spines) of patients across the world.
But to keep pushing boundaries, we need someone who can write firmware that works flawlessly inside the human body.
The Opportunity
You’ll take ownership of our next-generation platform - an ultra-low-power implant that’s undergoing a microcontroller transition to meet new global cybersecurity standards. This isn’t a ground-up rebuild or a hands-off maintenance role - it’s surgery on a live system that thousands of people rely on, with real-time constraints and no room for error.
The day-to-day? You’ll contribute to embedded design for Class III, safety-critical medical devices, navigate bare metal firmware and RTOS implementations, and help drive our internal migration to ARM Cortex-based platforms.
But here’s where it gets interesting:
- You’ll shape the direction of the firmware stack on a product that’s literally inside someone’s body
- You’ll define the future state of how we integrate cybersecurity, encryption, and over-the-air upgradability into systems that cannot fail
- You’ll mentor others shoulder-to-shoulder, as someone who genuinely wants to level up the team around you
You’ll thrive here if you:
- Write embedded C for bare-metal systems or RTOS environments (we're transitioning to one on ARM Cortex MCUs)
- Understand the trade-offs in ultra-low-power, resource-constrained environments and take pride in optimising every byte
- Are used to writing for safety-critical or regulated systems - medtech is ideal, but aerospace, automotive, or defence translate well
- Know your way around I2C, SPI, UART, and the gritty reality of talking to hardware
- Believe documentation isn’t just compliance - it’s part of building something that lasts
The vibe?
Smart, grounded people solving real problems. No egos. No passengers. Just a team of engineers who want to build the best tech possible - and get it into the hands of people who need it most. We call it the “spark” - a mindset that blends curiosity, humility, and a bias for doing good work.
Sydney-based. 3 days on-site is the norm, but we're pragmatic - come in when the hardware needs you, stay flexible otherwise.
If you’ve ever wanted your work to matter more - this is it.
