Communications Officer
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance (NATSIWA)
Part-time - 2 days/week (30.4 hours per fortnight)
About the Role
The Communications Officer is responsible for delivering NATSIWA’s communication strategies across digital, social, and traditional media. This role maintains the organisation’s website and social media presence, supports internal and external communications, and assists with events and marketing initiatives. It is an exciting opportunity for a communications professional to promote NATSIWA’s advocacy work and increase its reach and impact nationally.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
Managing NATSIWA’s website and social media platforms to ensure consistent and engaging content
Drafting newsletters, media releases, public statements, and reports
Assisting in the organisation and promotion of marketing and networking events
Supporting the CEO with preparation of reports, board briefs, and submissions
Coordinating meeting logistics, documentation, and minute-taking
Liaising with stakeholders to enhance NATSIWA’s public relations and advocacy efforts
Managing stakeholder contact lists and ensuring timely communication
Providing travel support and maintaining records in line with NATSIWA’s policies

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance (NATSIWA) was established in 2009 to present solutions and priorities to Government to inform policy and to further gender equality and improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. NATSIWA provides a strong and effective voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in both domestic and international policy advocacy processes.
About You
You are a creative, organised communications professional who can adapt messaging across multiple platforms. You have excellent writing skills, an eye for detail, and a strong ability to engage with diverse audiences. You are committed to NATSIWA’s mission and ready to use your communications expertise to strengthen the voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
You will have:
Strong experience in communications, digital content management, or public relations
Proficiency managing websites and social media platforms
Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to draft engaging, accurate content
The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
Experience coordinating events and supporting stakeholder engagement
Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and digital marketing tools
Essential Requirements
Ability to satisfy a National Criminal History Check
Experience working within an Indigenous, advocacy, or not-for-profit organisation
Desirable
Tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field
Experience in digital marketing and media engagement
Familiarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advocacy and policy issues
To perform this role, it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti- Discrimination Act 1991.
