Welcome to St John of God Health Care

St John of God Health Care is one of the largest private providers of health care services in Australia, employing more than 16,000 employees (caregivers). We operate 26 hospitals and services comprising more than 3,300 hospital beds, including home nursing, disability services and social outreach programs.

As a Catholic, not-for-profit group, we invest all profits to the communities we serve by updating and expanding our facilities and technology; expanding existing services and developing and acquiring new services; and providing Social Outreach services to people experiencing disadvantage to improve health and wellbeing.

St John of God Geraldton Hospital is a small, community-focused acute private hospital which cares for people living in the coastal town and regional areas in WA's Midwest. The hospital closely supports the public hospital, Geraldton Regional Hospital, to ensure the community has access to a comprehensive range of services.

Your role
To contribute to development and maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment by implementing and monitoring OHS activities to continuously improve OHS at St John of God Geraldton Hospital. You will be required to design, develop and implement innovative site-level activities to improve OHS, along with driving site-level identification, implementation and monitoring of risk controls.

The Position

  • Promote and apply professional and ethical standards to practice, including compliance with OHS legislation.
  • Support the implementation of a systems approach to OHS.
  • Facilitate development and utilization of divisional operational plans to address and improve the control of OHS hazards, their associated risks and related costs.
  • Support key influencers, including site leaders, on strategies to foster an organizational culture that prioritise OHS.
  • Engage with site leaders at all levels to develop their responsibility and leadership in OHS.
  • Lead the implementation of OHS risk management processes and support their maintenance and monitoring, including hazard identification processes and the identification and implementation of controls for effective OHS risk management and risk minimization.
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate processes and procedures to investigate, analyse and report on incidents and hazards indicating failures or inadequacies of controls. Mentor leaders and caregivers to lead and participate in incident investigations.
  • Support periodic management reviews to systematically assess, monitor and identify areas for improvement in the OHS strategy, management system and OHS culture.
  • Collect, collate and interpret information to develop business cases for OHS improvement strategies and activities.
  • Analyse and apply data to identify trends and information to monitor and report on OHS performance.
  • Communicate, engage with and influence line leaders and other stakeholders to mitigate risk and optimize caregiver health and safety.
  • Be a "trusted advisor" to influence management decision making to consider OHS implications.

You will posses a tertiary or vocational qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field. You will have the ability to work under general direction within a clear framework of accountability, exercising substantial responsibility and autonomy in the area of work. This position requires you to have detailed comprehensive and integrated OHS technical knowledge, underpinned by a theoretical understanding, along with the ability to apply cognitive and technical skills to develop creative solutions to non-routine and sometimes complex problems in a defined but wide range of environments.

To succeed in this position, you can apply cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of workplace and external sources, considering the views of others as a basis for decision making. Furthermore, you establish communication channels and develop and maintain relationships to influence and mentor line leaders along with utilising your communication, engagement and leadership skills to initiate and support change.

Above all, patient care will be at the core of everything you do committing to and supporting our Mission and Values.
