We are looking for a driven individual, to join our Ergon Retail Trading team as an ‘Energy Trader / Analyst’. This is a permanent role, reporting to our ‘Manager Trading’ and can be based in any of our main EQL locations. This is a development opportunity for someone looking for a career in Energy Trading.
About Energy Queensland / Ergon Retail:

Ergon Energy Retail is the energy retailer for Energy Queensland, responsible for selling electricity to customers throughout regional Queensland. We have an established Energy Trading Department, which is undergoing a transformational change process to adapt to the constantly changing Australian energy markets. We work closely with large power / gas / electricity producers, renewable energy assets, energy storage owners and various financial services / hedge funds to risk manage our retail exposure.
The Opportunity:
We are looking for a university graduate with up to 5 years professional experience within the financial analysis sector. Ergon Retail will look to train and develop this person to become a fully accredited (AFMA) Energy Trader. The successful applicant will have a Bachelor Degree in a relevant field (Maths, Finance, Statistics, Economics, etc.), strong analytical mindset and expertise in financial markets, energy analysis, data analytics, statistics, etc. In this position, you will be part of a team that is key in shaping financial performance, in a fast-paced environment and managing electricity market risk. The role will also contribute to innovative strategies to optimise returns.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Working with Energy Traders on existing and new energy analytics models.
- Monitor and support energy trading and wholesale market activities.
- Assist with market trading, including occasional weekends and after-hours work.
- Support load and spot price forecasting using analytical and digital tools.
- Contribute to energy risk assessment, reporting, and management.
- Analyse energy risk data and provide recommendations.
- Assist in developing trading strategies with market analysis.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with company policies and ring-fencing requirements.
- Promote a safe, diverse, and inclusive work environment.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant legislation and company procedures.
Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer/Data Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong background in data analytics, statistics, programming, or computational mathematics
- Solid understanding of the Australian Energy Market and related regulations
- Effective communication, teamwork, and negotiation skills
- Strong analytical and complex problem-solving abilities
- Adaptable and comfortable in dynamic, evolving environments
- Proficient with modern technology and analytics tools
- Experience with SQL, VBA, Python, and advanced spreadsheets for modelling and analysis
- Proven ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
- Commitment to workplace health, safety, and environmental best practices
