Shape a More Sustainable, Circular Sydney

Public Sector People are proud to partner with the City of Sydney to appoint a forward-thinking Planning and Policy Coordinator – Resource Recovery. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead the development and implementation of strategic waste planning policies, helping the City progress toward its Sustainable Sydney 2030 goals.

The City of Sydney is recognised for its commitment to sustainability, liveability, and innovation. With a population of over 250,000 residents and a growing number of businesses and visitors, the City is working to become a zero-waste, circular economy that leaves no one behind.

About the Role:

Sitting within the Resource Recovery team in the Cleansing and Waste business unit, this key leadership role is responsible for advancing waste policies and planning frameworks that drive resource recovery outcomes in one of Australia’s most high-profile urban environments. Reporting to the Service and Policy Manager, you will work closely with developers, planners, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure the City’s waste planning aligns with best practice and enables sustainable outcomes at every stage of development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the review and implementation of waste policy and planning guidelines across new and existing developments
  • Provide expert advice on waste management referrals for DAs and planning proposals
  • Collaborate with architects, planners, and engineers to embed resource recovery principles in the built environment
  • Resolve complex operational waste issues in high-density and mixed-use developments
  • Manage projects, contractors, and initiatives that improve waste outcomes in line with the City's waste strategy
  • Develop relationships with internal teams across planning, sustainability, rangers and customer service to enable seamless implementation

What you'll bring:

You are a technically capable and solutions-oriented policy professional with a strong understanding of urban planning and waste management in complex city environments. You know how to translate strategic objectives into practical guidelines, and you thrive in a collaborative environment where innovation and stakeholder engagement are essential.

  • Tertiary qualifications in urban planning, environmental management, architecture, or a related field
  • Experience working across waste planning, development controls and policy development
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, planning instruments, and environmental policy
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience supervising staff or contractors (desirable)
  • A current driver’s license (essential)

Why City of Sydney?

  • A rare opportunity to influence the future of sustainability in Sydney
  • Work for a values-led organisation committed to innovation and impact
  • Dynamic team culture with strong internal collaboration
  • Competitive salary and benefits with long-term development opportunities
