My Bowen Basin based client is renowned in the coal mining industry for hiring and developing top talent. Right now they are looking to recruit an up and coming Mining Engineer to backfill a role that has become vacant through promotion. It’s an entry point for a qualified Mining Engineer who has already started to make their mark in the coal industry but who wants to learn more and get exposure to all aspects of the mining industry process.

Daily you’ll work with other mining engineers, managing the scheduling of resources across the site to minimise delays and optimise dig plans. You’ll be responsible for maintaining accurate scheduling volumes and understanding blasted inventories. You’ll be responsible for the rolling schedule and presenting it at weekly planning meetings. You’ll work closely with the Coal Quality Engineers on detailed forward coal exposure/mining sequences. You’ll also be expected to use drone technology to capture high quality photos and videos of mining areas, blasts, and stockpiles for use in mining planning and reconciliation.

You’ll also be exposed to end of month reforecasts and reconciliations, working closely with Senior Engineers and the Superintendent as they liaise with Head Office Finance and Marketing. You’ll play an active role in short term mine design – pit, dump, and ramp designs – and work closely with Operations on plan options and final plans. As part of your development you can expect to provide short term cover for other Technical Services roles, whilst you’ll have input to daily/weekly drill and blast plans. Success in all these aspects of the role will depend on your ability to work constructively and positively across the site, engaging stakeholders at all levels, following through and delivering.

Your development will include:

Gaining exposure to all aspects of the mining process

Taking responsibility for one pit

Broader focus on Drill & Blast, survey, geology, coal quality, environmental monitoring & complia

Success will demand your ability to:

Get out and about on site, meeting people at all levels

Communicate easily and naturally with everyone from digger/operator up

Influence and communicate the plan and win engagement to it

Chase knowledge and learn, learn, learn!

Be productive and impactful in his role

When I asked my client to describe the person he wants, he clearly stated:

A Mining Engineer with 2 to 5 years’ experience

A solid understanding of coal mining

Good exposure to the mining processes and equipment used in Open Cut

Ideally some exposure to mine planning as a process

Great people skills + ability to engage at ALL levels

Tactful but upfront, willing to learn

Experience in mining scheduling and design software e.g. Vulcan, Deswik, Spry, 3D Dig

A consistent career path – no job hopping.
