Senior Data Scientist - Large Retail Brand

Location - Sydney - Surry Hills

Duration - 6 months contract to begin with strong possibility of extension and turning perm depending on performance.

Part time - 3 days a week with 1 day from the office

The Role

My client (one of Australia's largest retail groups) is on a look out for a passionate Senior Data Scientist, to work in a part time capacity for 3 days a week (1 day in the office)

Job sharing with the Principle Data Scientist in the team, who is going on Mat Leave and will be doing only 2 days/ week from next month, you will get to work on some interesting data science and engineering initiatives across logistics, commerce, and broader business operation teams.

You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams on challenges like delivery time estimation, pricing, segmentation, churn prediction, and feature experimentation.

The ideal candidate combines a scientific mindset with strong coding and engineering skills, comfortable building robust pipelines, working in cloud environments, and delivering practical solutions that drive impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain ML solutions from prototype to production across logistics, marketing and operations.
  Own the end-to-end deployment of data products, including pipeline design, testing, versioning, and monitoring.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and business teams to implement models and measure outcomes.
• Communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Champion experimentation through A/B testing and statistical evaluation of new features.

Must Haves

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field.
• 4-5+ years of hands-on experience developing and deploying ML models in production.
  Strong Python skills and fluency in SQL.
• Experience with version control, testing, and CI/CD work flows.
• Solid understanding of core ML/statistical techniques like forecasting, regression, tree models (e.g. XGBoost), clustering.
• Deep familiarity with cloud environments and data infrastructure (ideally GCP, BigQuery).
• Experience with orchestration and infrastructure tools (e.g. Airflow, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Cloud Functions).
• Experience of working in cross functional teams within an agile delivery framework.
