Senior Meteorologist Severe Weather

Executive Level 1

Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth

Position overview

Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased impacts on the economy, infrastructure, property, and wellbeing.

To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology has undertaken significant steps to deliver customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operations through the Community Services Group (CSG).

CSG is comprised of Environmental Prediction Services (EPS), Decision Support Services (DSS) and National Production Services (NPS) which are configured to enable scalable, national and resilient services. The EPS program is responsible for the national monitoring, analysis and reporting of hazardous conditions. During severe weather, EPS will be deployed into operations to deliver specialised, hazard-based advice, warning and outlook services.

Operating with a national capability, EPS has four predictive service units: Severe Weather, Marine and Antarctic, Water, and Climate, each of which play a key role in the value chain of the Bureau's capability to deliver a suite of valuable products and services to the Australian community.

The Severe Weather Team is responsible for the daily monitoring of Thunderstorms, Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall, Tropical Cyclone, and Fire, Heatwave & Air Quality. The team provides advice on conditions which are hazardous or may have a significant impact. The team functions as a single capability across three locations, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. The Tropical Cyclone team is located in Perth and Brisbane, the Fire, Heatwave and Air Quality team in Perth and Melbourne, and the Thunderstorm and Heavy rainfall team in Brisbane and Melbourne.

There will be an expectation that Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will develop and maintain hazard expertise and competency across multiple hazard areas and teams to allow for flexible deployment, operational resilience and diversity of work. This may include skills that contribute outside of Severe Weather into other parts of CSG.

The Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will also have a demonstrated ability to coach, develop and mentor individuals and teams. They will deeply understand and articulate the needs of Bureau customers, partners and stakeholders, in order to lead on the development and delivery of high value products and services.

Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will display a dedicated curiosity about severe weather and the impacts of the evolving weather, flood, ocean, and climate landscape. Employing personal drive and integrity, and communicating with influence, you will empower a high-performing team through promoting a positive culture of teamwork and continuous improvement.

This role will report to the Team Lead of their hazard specialisation and will be expected to undertake shift work and extended working hours as directed during severe weather.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 10 August 2025
