The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Senior Operations Manager to provide a critical role at Melbourne Assessment Prison.

About the Business Unit

The Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is a maximum-security correctional facility located on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The Prison is the State's main reception prison, receiving prisoners directly from the Courts and Police and provides assessment and orientation services for all male prisoners received into the prison system. The MAP also operates the Melbourne County Court, Supreme Court and Supreme Court Appeals custody facilities, located on the corners of William and Lonsdale Streets in the CBD.

These facilities manage both male and female prisoners of all security ratings, operating Monday to Friday. The location also manages the St Vincent's Hospital holding cells, providing custodial liaison and coordination of all prisoner escorts attending the hospital for medical outpatient appointments from prison locations across the State. Map also looks after the security function at the Adult Parole Board and the Post Sentence Authority located at 50 Franklin Street West Melbourne.

About the Role

The Senior Operations Manager is responsible for managing the high level, day-to-day operational requirements of the prison, contributing to the ongoing strategic planning, implementation, and improvement of prison operations in a changing environment.

The Senior Operations Manager has responsibility for overseeing all aspects of day-to-day management of the prison and that all policies and procedures are followed. This will include liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure that offender management issues and requirements are being met. The role also involves the coordination of information and services to the various areas within the prison, and the ability to develop and implement new policies and procedures. They will also be required to identify and address issues concerning the prison, prisoners, and staff.

The Senior Operations Manager will also undertake the responsibilities acting as the General Manager of the prison when required.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Manage the high level, day-to-day operational needs of the prison, including oversight of security, operational compliance and implementation of policies, strategies, programs, and OHS.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe workplace by acting immediately upon the receipt of any bullying, discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, or inappropriate behaviour complaint, report, or observation.
  • Incorporate safe work practices in all workplace activities and foster an environment that encourages the development of a safe and healthy workplace.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience within a Correctional Services environment.
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of the full range of Microsoft Windows and MS Office application suite software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with staff, prisoners, and other service providers in the delivery of an integrated, whole of prison program approach to reducing re-offending.
  • Knowledge of current legislative requirements pertaining to a correctional environment.
  • An excellent understanding of contemporary prisoner management and offender services practices.

Qualifications/requirements

  • A qualification in Business Management/Human Resource related discipline and or commensurate experience to meet the key accountabilities relevant to this role.
  • A full and current Victorian driver's licence or a minimum P2 driver's licence.
