About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Financial Control, this is an exciting opportunity to support the development of a financial controls and compliance program in large complex organisation including championing the application of accounting standards and the creation of external annual financial statements for the Macquarie University Group.

As the Senior Accountant, Accounting Advisory and Controls, you will play a key role in shaping and executing a robust financial control and compliance program across the Macquarie University Group. Acting as a subject matter expert in national accounting standards, you will provide strategic guidance to ensure consistent and accurate application across the Group. In addition, you will lead the preparation and delivery of the Group's external annual financial statements, contributing to the integrity and transparency of financial reporting at one of Australia's leading universities.

Group Finance provides critical financial services and strategic support to enable the University's teaching, research and community impact. The Financial Controls team provides technical accounting, internal controls and compliance advisory for business units across the University Group. You will be part of a team that leads the external financial reporting process and is responsible for maintaining the University Group's Financial Risk Management Framework. It's a dynamic and impactful function that ensures financial integrity and supports strategic decision-making across the institution.

About you

You are client focused and have well-developed self-management skills. You are able to analyse large complex data sets and present relevant information to senior management. You demonstrate the ability to build trust and manage relationships with multiple key stakeholders. You are confident to identify, suggest, and lead the implementation of process improvement measures.

  • Degree in accounting, finance or related fields of study with CA/CPA qualified with several years of relevant post-qualification experience in a large and complex organisation.
  • Experience in a similar role within a large, complex organization with complex accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Significant experience conducting compliance programs to improve financial accounting and controls processes and procedures.
  • Significant experience providing specialized financial accounting advice to a senior audience.
  • In-depth experience in evaluating new accounting standards, assessing impacts and supporting the system, process and people change programs required to ensure compliance in a large, complex organization
  • Significant experience in the preparation of complex group audited financial statements.
  • Significant experience in preparing material for external audits, and liaising with external auditors, for a large and complex organization with multiple reporting entities.
  • Demonstrated ability in building and managing relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of core financial functions, frameworks, models and approaches

Highly desirable

  • Prior experience as a 'Big 4' external auditor or accounting advisory specialist.
  • Working with a range of financial databases and systems.
  • Use of digital compliance reporting tools
