Origin Espresso Port Douglas is on the hunt for a fulltime Head Barista. This position offers a salary ranging from $65,000 to $75,000 per annum, plus 12% superannuation, depending on skills and experience.

The successful applicant must meet the criteria as listed below:

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of baristas in delivering exceptional coffee experiences.

• Conduct cupping sessions for each batch of roasted coffee, ensuring quality control and grading.

• Serve coffee with a deep understanding of its processing, origin, flavour profiles, and brewing methods.

• Create unique espresso and pour-over recipes tailored to each coffee's origin and flavour.

• Maintain and troubleshoot espresso machines and grinders, ensuring optimal performance.

• Ensure high standards of cup quality by detecting defects and implementing corrective measures.

• Manage high-volume coffee production in a fast-paced environment, handling approximately 10 kg of coffee over a 4-hour shift.

• Execute latte art with precision and creativity.

• Collaborate with the team to foster a positive and energetic work environment.

• Take customer orders and provide recommendations based on individual taste preferences.

• Ensure cleanliness of workstations and equipment in accordance with food safety standards.

• Monitor inventory and coordinate with suppliers to maintain stock levels of coffee beans, milk, and consumables.

• Operate point-of-sale systems and handle cash/card transactions when required.

Work Experience & Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a barista in specialty coffee roasters, handling specialty-grade coffee.

• Certificate II or III in Hospitality or equivalent

• Proficient in ASC scoring and familiar with TDS meters.

• Experience with La Marzocco Linea PB and Mahlköniggrinders.

• Knowledge of coffee roasting basics and ability to curate coffee selections based on origin and flavour.

• Strong problem-solving skills, especially in detecting and fixing extraction issues.

• Must be able to work efficiently as a duo on the espresso machine.

• Proven ability to lead a team, with a bubbly disposition and a positive, can-do attitude.

• Previous experience in a solo barista role is a plus, with the ability to handle at least 2 kg of coffee per hour.
