The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Vocational Services Supervisor to provide a critical role at Western Plains Correctional Centre.
About the Business Unit
Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of Corrections Victoria and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities.
The Vocational Services Team consists of three key portfolio - industries, education and recreation. The role of the team is to prepare prisoners for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities through prisoner employment, integrated job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities.
About the Role
The Vocational Services Supervisor is responsible for leading a small multi-disciplinary team, including recreation staff and a barber, to create and deliver innovative programs that enhance the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of the people in our care. This role focuses on fostering engagement and participation, promoting personal care and encouraging active lifestyles in alignment with organisational goals for holistic health. It will also oversee the planning, organising and delivery of events, both cultural and sporting, linked to the Vocational Services portfolio.
The Vocational Services Supervisor will oversee safe operating procedures and other OHS legislative requirements and compliance within prison recreation. They will ensure recreation staff under their supervision correctly operate a variety of fitness/gym equipment, collate information, observe and assess prisoner behaviour and prepare relevant reports.
Some of your duties will include:
- Contribute to the development of the service, including operating policies and procedures.
- Assist the Vocational Services Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs according to current correctional philosophies, legislative requirements, prison policies and correctional standards.
- Supervise and motivate a multidisciplinary team of staff, including contractors, to ensure efficient and effective delivery of programs and services.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in recreation and fitness programs and services, including to diverse and special prisoner cohorts, and the ability to co-ordinate multi-disciplinary teams and a range of external stakeholders.
- An understanding of operational procedures within a correctional services environment would be highly regarded.
- Prior experience managing resources including the allocation of staff, workloads and team-based responsibilities.
Qualifications/requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification or proven track record in the delivery of Recreation and events is desirable.
