The Role

Base Managers are employed Australia-wide, enabling our three services Army, Navy and Air Force to do their job.

Our Bases vary significantly depending on the Services that they support. As a Base Manager, you will build strong relationships with various military, civilian and contractor stakeholders with a shared focus on the sustainable management of the Base to support operational, training and other specialist functions.

It is an exciting role and environment, where no two days are the same, but on a typical day as a Base Manager, you will:

  • Lead an integrated service delivery team responsible for overseeing the delivery of high quality services that enable Defence capability.
  • Be in a high tempo leadership role with considerable independence and responsibility to engage with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders in order to achieve service delivery outcomes.
  • Work closely with industry partners focusing on Defence projects and estate outcomes.
  • Ensuring Base Security, WHS, and Emergency Management procedures comply with relevant standards.
  • Participate in fora providing input into operational support of base activities.
  • You will assist, where required, Defence’s aid to the civil community in times of crisis.

About our Team

At Security and Estate Group (SEG), we are not just a team - we are a family of passionate and dedicated professionals committed to protecting and advancing Defence's strategic interests. As part of the Associate Secretary Group, we are responsible for managing security clearances, the Defence industry security program, and providing security training and awareness. The South East Zone (SEZ) is a branch of the Service Delivery Division within the Defence Security and Estate Group (SEG).

SEZ provides essential, on-the-ground services and support to Defence personnel at locations across the Riverina, Victoria and Tasmania. Base Management Teams are responsible for effectively securing, managing and maintaining Defence Bases across Australia. This work is a critical business enabler of Defence capabilities, prioritising base resources and ensuring service delivery standards across the Defence estate.

Successful candidates will have a proven record of achieving organisational goals whilst contributing to a high-performance service delivery culture.

The skills that we seek in you:

  • Demonstrated people leadership or team management experience in an operational or service delivery environment.
  • Highly developed communication, organisation and negotiation skills with the ability to influence a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Is able to confidently work collaboratively with various military, civilian and contractor stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, identify issues and drive continuous improvement activities.
  • The ability to research policy and procedure and determine practical outcomes that achieve objectives.
  • Proven experience in providing detailed professional and policy advice about complex work.
  • Proven experience identifying and anticipating stakeholders' needs and expectations to achieve outcomes.
  • The ability to forward-plan a workload and the agility to re-prioritise at short notice.
