(St John NT) is seeking committed individuals to join our team as Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs)—the critical link between the community and frontline emergency care.
As the contracted provider of ambulance services for the Northern Territory Government, St John NT operates across Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, and Nhulunbuy. To deliver timely emergency and non-emergency care across these regions, we depend on skilled EMDs who answer Triple Zero (000) calls, quickly assess patient conditions, provide essential pre-arrival instructions, dispatch ambulance resources, and coordinate patient transport.
This position demands resilience, sharp attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively in a dynamic, technical environment.
What you’ll do
As an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, you will:
- Answer Triple Zero (000) emergency and non-emergency calls
- Assess patient needs and provide lifesaving pre-arrival instructions
- Dispatch ambulance resources and coordinate transport logistics
- Work closely with Paramedics and operational staff to ensure safe and timely responses
- Use advanced communications technology in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment
Training & Career Pathway
You’ll start as a Trainee EMD, receiving full support, mentoring and accredited training:
- HLT31020 – Certificate III in Ambulance Communications (Call-taking)
- Progression to dispatch duties via the HLT41020 – Certificate IV in Ambulance Communications (Dispatch)
Training is delivered in partnership with St John Ambulance Australia Ltd. (RTO 88041).

What You’ll Bring

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly, assertively, and compassionately with people in crisis.
- Strong multitasking skills and attention to detail
- Ability to accurately read maps and interpret information.
- Excellent computer literacy with the ability to efficiently work across multiple digital platforms, including typing at least 40 words per minute with 95% accuracy.
- Ability to thrive in a structured, team-based environment while working a rotating 24/7 roster of 12-hour shifts (2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off)
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the role, you must:
- Meet the specified selection criteria
- Hold a current First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011)
- Demonstrate medical and psychological suitability for Emergency Medical Dispatcher duties
Employment is also subject to:
- Successful criminal history and association checks
- Valid Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
- Up-to-date immunisation status
- Passing a critical pre-employment dispatcher skills test
