About The Opportunity

This role is about helping to ensure our region remains safe, accessible, and welcoming. As a Local Laws Officer, you’ll work throughout the community enforcing Council’s Local Laws and relevant legislation. You will (but not limited to):

  • Investigate and manage compliance matters such as abandoned vehicles, overgrown properties, illegal signage, accumulation of materials, and illegal camping
  • Conduct regular patrols and monitor regulated parking areas
  • Respond to public complaints and enquiries in a professional, timely manner
  • Issue warnings, compliance notices, and Penalty Infringement Notices
  • Collect evidence and maintain accurate records to support investigations
  • Liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve local law matters
  • Support community education and contribute to awareness campaigns
  • Report public safety issues observed during patrols
  • Participate in rostered Saturday patrols as required

This position involves a mix of field work, administration, and direct engagement with members of the public. You’ll need to apply Council’s regulations fairly and consistently, while demonstrating professionalism and sound judgement in every interaction.

About You

You are proactive, resilient, and motivated by working independently in the community. You understand how to navigate challenging conversations while staying calm, courteous and compliant with procedures.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • A current ‘C’ class driver’s licence (mandatory).
  • Demonstrated experience or the ability to learn compliance and enforcement practices.
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Sound computer literacy and the ability to learn CRM and mobile enforcement systems.
  • Ability to operate electronic equipment including mobile printers, tablets, and phones.
  • The ability to effectively manage conflict and maintain a calm, professional approach to members of the public.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a Local Laws, compliance or regulatory environment or a related filed with transferrable skills.
  • Certificate III or IV in Government (Statutory Compliance), or similar.
  • Experience dealing with challenging or confrontational situations in a professional and calm manner.
