Salary - VPS 3.1: $79,122 to $87,599 + 12% superannuation

About the role:

Reporting to the Science Outreach Lead, the Science Project Officer is a member of a team responsible for supporting the delivery of Science Division priorities with a focus on proactive community science initiatives. You will apply your strong communication and administration skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support initiatives to prevent harm to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste.

In this role you will:

  • Provide administration and project coordination support for the Latrobe Valley Air Network Plan and citizen science initiatives, including workshops and events (this may include occasional regional travel and weekend or out of work hours).
  • Maintain the ongoing operation of EPA's GardenSafe program, including the day-to-day operation of the soil screening laboratory and screening equipment, with training provided. There may be periods where up to one day a week is spent in the laboratory.
  • Support the development of communication messages and materials, including the translation of scientific/technical information so that it can be understood by a range of audiences, including the general public.
  • Use your initiative to prioritise tasks and monitor your workflow in the delivery of organisational priorities in accordance with approved project/service plans, achieving the highest standards of performance, accountability, collaboration, ethics, and integrity.

Skills and experience:

  • Graduate qualifications and/or relevant experience in applied/environmental science is mandatory; post-graduate qualifications in a relevant field are highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a general lab setting and with the safe use and application of scientific equipment and techniques relevant to environmental chemistry and/or monitoring.
  • Experience using initiative to proactively identify, communicate, and address delivery risks and opportunities to improve organisational outcomes.
  • Communication and engagement skills including the ability to effectively negotiate and influence.
  • A current driver's licence is mandatory.
