About the role

Are you a senior legal professional with a passion for public law, legislative reform, and strategic advisory work? The NSW Department of Customer Service is seeking an accomplished legal executive to lead its advisory legal team as Assistant General Counsel, Regulator Advisory.

This is a high-impact leadership role where your expertise will directly influence regulatory operations, legislative development, and policy implementation across NSW Fair Trading, the Building Commission NSW, and SafeWork NSW.

As Assistant General Counsel, Regulator Advisory you will lead a team of advisory lawyers delivering expert legal services that support the agency's strategic, operational, and legislative priorities. You will provide high-level legal advice to Ministers, Executives, and senior stakeholders, ensuring legal risk is effectively managed and government objectives are achieved with integrity and precision.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver strategic legal advice on complex legislative, regulatory, and policy matters.
  • Lead and manage a high-performing legal team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous development.
  • Oversee legal input into cabinet submissions, ministerial correspondence, and legislative amendments.
  • Provide guidance on statutory interpretation, administrative law, and legal frameworks underpinning government operations.
  • Support the development and carriage of legislative reform through Parliament.
  • Advise on legal issues related to delegations, disciplinary processes, and machinery of government changes.

  • Proven experience leading a new function, inspiring and bringing together a team of experts to achieve desired outcomes in a complex and fast paced environment
  • Expertise in statutory construction and/or administrative law
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to provide strategic advice on complex legal issues to senior stakeholders
  • Experience providing legal advice to regulators is highly desired
