The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Officer (APS5) and Senior Community Engagement Officer (APS6).
About the role
We are looking for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Officers and Senior Community Engagement Officers to help the ABS connect and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities; and ensure cultural support and guidance is provided to ABS staff.
APS 5 Responsibilities include:
- Engage with urban and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their organisations, and the wider community about statistics and statistical issues related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through collaborating and partnering to increase understanding of, and participation in, ABS collections.
- Return information to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including the provision of statistical training to communities in order to increase their access and usage of ABS information; and improve the quality and relevance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander statistics for key stakeholders including meeting the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- Provide support to ABS staff in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their organisations, and the wider community.
APS 6 Responsibilities include:
- Supporting a team to help the ABS connect with and understand the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their organisations, and the wider community about statistics and statistical issues related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through collaborating and partnering to increase understanding of and participation in ABS collections.
- Return information to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities including the provision of statistical training to communities to increase access and usage of ABS information; and improve the quality and relevance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander statistics for key stakeholders including meeting the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- Provide support to ABS staff in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their organisations, and the wider community.
What we are looking for (selection criteria)
This role is only open to people that identify and are recognised as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under the Affirmative Measures Guidelines. This is your opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander voice and needs are embedded into our work outputs.
To be suitable as a Community Engagement Officer (APS5) you will have most, or all, of the following skills, qualities and experience:
- cultural competency- roles in the Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics (CoATSIS) require you to have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- demonstrated ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, researchers, government agencies and NGO stakeholders; being able to develop and nurture both internal and external stakeholder relationships to achieve results
- demonstrated written/oral communication and presentation skills
- demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team, embrace change and actively provides advice to mitigate risks
- demonstrated ability to develop sound statistical and analytical skills to understand how data can impact and empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities
- ability to undertake travel to remote and regional areas.
In addition to the above, as a Community Engagement Manager (APS6), you will also be expected to demonstrate your:
- manage and work effectively with staff within a diverse and geographically dispersed team
- demonstrated ability to collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues to develop and provide cultural guidance and methodologies to ensure cultural safety
- demonstrated ability to foster a strong, inclusive, diverse, trusting and collaborative culture within and across teams.
