The ODPP plays a critical role in Queensland's justice system, representing the State in criminal matters across various courts, including the High Court of Australia, Court of Appeal (Qld), Supreme Court, Mental Health Court, District Court, Childrens Court of Queensland, and, in limited cases, the Magistrates Court. With a commitment to upholding justice, the ODPP prosecutes serious criminal offences and ensures the fair and efficient administration of justice.
About the Opportunity:
Are you ready to lead, inspire, and make a meaningful impact in Queensland's justice system? The ODPP is seeking a dedicated and experienced criminal lawyer for a temporary, flexible full-time position lasting 12 months with possibility of extension. This is your chance to take on a senior leadership role where you'll not only advocate for justice but also shape the future of prosecution services in Queensland.
As a Principal Crown Prosecutor, you will:
- Lead in the courtroom: Appear as leading counsel in complex criminal trials in superior courts.
- Exercise prosecutorial discretion: Initiate, vary, or discontinue serious criminal charges independently.
- Provide expert advice: Act as a trusted source of guidance on complex and sensitive legal matters.
- Manage Chambers operations: Ensure the delivery of high-quality prosecution services while driving continuous improvement.
- Mentor and develop staff: Provide professional guidance to Crown Prosecutors and legal staff, fostering a culture of growth and capability.
- Support staff well-being: Monitor and actively manage the health and well-being of your team.
- Build stakeholder relationships: Facilitate effective communication between the ODPP and other parties to ensure efficient case finalisation.
- Drive organisational improvement: Contribute to ODPP-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing systems and work practices.
What We're Looking For:
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Proven experience managing work units and contributing to state-wide initiatives.
- Expertise in conducting highly complex criminal trials and appeals.
- Strong leadership skills to manage, motivate, and develop legal and support staff, including performance management and professional development.
- A commitment to addressing the needs of victims of crime and fostering positive stakeholder relationships.
- A proactive approach to monitoring and supporting staff health and well-being.
- An unwavering commitment to professional and ethical standards.
Mandatory Qualifications and Requirements:
To be eligible, you must be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please provide your date of admission).
This is a unique opportunity to take on a challenging and rewarding role that combines project management, courtroom advocacy, leadership, and strategic influence. If you're passionate about justice and ready to make a difference, we encourage you to apply!
Applications to remain current for 12 months.
