Youth Legal Service is a not-for-profit community legal centre that has been providing free legal assistance and education to young people in Western Australia since 1985. We are committed to empowering young people, promoting social justice, and advocating for their rights. Our team of experienced legal professionals work tirelessly to ensure young people have access to the legal support they need.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Lawyer to join our team at Youth Legal Service in Perth, WA. This is initially a six-month contract, with strong potential for extension by a further six months.
You will play a crucial role in providing high-quality legal advice and representation to young people in our community. You will appear in both the Children’s and Magistrates Courts on criminal matters and restraining orders, also provide one-off legal advice and undertake tasks in both civil and criminal law matters, present at law education workshops for young people, and manage criminal injuries compensation cases and other civil casework.
What you'll be doing
Providing comprehensive legal services, including advice, advocacy, and representation, to young clients on a wide range of legal matters
Conducting client interviews, preparing case files, and managing client communication
Researching and analysing legal issues, and preparing legal documents and submissions
Appearing in court and representing clients in legal proceedings
Collaborating with other legal professionals and community stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcomes for your clients
Participating in the development and delivery of community legal education programs
What we're looking for
Admission as a Lawyer in Western Australia and holding a legal practice certificate
2+ years post admission experience
Experience appearing as counsel in criminal matters including the provision of duty lawyer services
Experience in legal service delivery including representation, casework and providing legal advice
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with a diverse range of clients
Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure
Familiarity with relevant legislation and regulations, and the ability to stay up-to-date with changes in the legal landscape
National Police Clearance, Working with Children’s Check, and current Driver’s Licence
