About Us:

Warringu is a not-for-profit organisation run by a community Board of Directors which members elect every year. The Board oversees the governance and strategic direction of the organisation. Warringu provides a specific range of services to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (and other) women and children impacted by family violence and homelessness both in Cairns and from surrounding areas including Yarrabah, the Atherton Tablelands, Cape York communities and the Torres Strait. This does not preclude the occasional clients from other cities throughout Qld and from other states when women may need to escape over State borders.

About the Role:

We are currently seeking a committed and compassionate Child Support Worker to to join our vibrant team supporting children and young people who have experienced family and/or sexual violence. This is your opportunity to be part of meaningful change — providing trauma-informed support and helping create safer futures for young people in our community.

You’ll be working face-to-face and over the phone, delivering individual support, group work, crisis interventions, and community education. The role also offers the chance to collaborate with other services, advocate for clients, and contribute to broader systemic change.

Position Requirements & Qualifications:

Relevant qualification (e.g. Social Science, Community Services) or 3+ years of experience in Domestic and Family Violence

Current driver’s license

Blue Card – Suitability for Child Related Employment

Selection Criteria:

Demonstrated experience of and skills in counselling interventions and support to children and young people, and an ability to articulate theoretical frameworks from different counselling models including Trauma Informed Practice

Highly developed and demonstrated understanding of developmental stages for children, adolescents and families

Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work cooperatively within a team environment to attain organisation and client goals, together with high level written and spoken communication to liaise with government and non-government agencies to advocate on behalf of clients

Demonstrated understanding of family and/or sexual violence, including knowledge of cultural differences. In addition, to understand the impacts this has on intersectional and related issues.

Demonstrated knowledge of legislation impacting on situations of family and/or sexual violence including relevant notifications and referral pathways
