About Us?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health Ltd was established by its founding members to provide a coordinated/integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the Southeast Qld Region.

The Birthing and Early Childhood Well-being Services Teams operate within the Family Health and Wellbeing Business Unit, and are focussed on the journey of families from preconception, through pregnancy and birthing care, into the period covering infancy and early childhood services. These services include the highly successful Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) pregnancy and birthing care service, the Australian Family Partnership Program providing intensive home support for parents and their infants to the end of the second year; and preventive child health and development support services.

About the Role?

The purpose of the Birthing & Early Childhood Nurse Educator position is to provide support to parents and carers of infants and young children to enhance family functioning and to promote childhood development and parental wellbeing. The role will entail health promotion, education, developmental assessments, and other clinical care supporting one of our MATSICHS clinics. The position will also ensure care is integrated across other internal services including Australian Family Partnership Program, primary care clinics, Birthing in Our Community, Family Wellbeing Services, social health, allied health and paediatric services. The position will deliver comprehensive home visiting service to women pregnant with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander baby and their families in partnership with a Family Partnership Worker.

Day to Day Duties Include:

  • Ensure women and their families have access to continuity of carer from a culturally competent workforce which focusses on family-centred, trauma informed holistic care.
  • Assist family’s transition and encourage continued engagement with their local medical service throughout their involvement with the Hub
  • Build and maintain relationships based on trust, support and growth with eligible women, their families, team colleagues and community members.
  • Carries a case load of up to 20 - 22 families depending on AFPP phases and client complexities.
  • Utilises the IUIH Client Incident Framework to guide quality improvement activities.
  • Provide care within the local primary healthcare clinic focused on health promotion, education, developmental assessments, and other clinical care supporting one of our MATSICHS clinics with community drop in service and yarns

About You?

  • Ability to demonstrate good clinical skill; maintain therapeutic boundaries and be aware of your own clinical knowledge and skill and committed to own personal and professional growth.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in working with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Current Criminal History Check or willing to access one
  • AHPRA Registration (Registered Nurse or Midwife)
  • Maternal and child health interest and experience
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD

Desirable, but not mandatory:

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
