The Role

Within this media role our successful applicant will shape the voice and reputation of one of Australia’s most significant national cultural institutions, the Australian War Memorial.

You will join a collaborative communications team which shares stories about the Memorial’s purpose as a shrine, an archive and a museum.

This is a creative role where you will newsgather and implement proactive and reactive media activities to promote the Memorial through its National Collection, the archive, its national events and programs.

This diverse role will help shape and tell powerful stories, support national commemorations, and foster engagement with the public and key stakeholders through the mass media.

Core Responsibilities

Collaborate on the production of both proactive and responsive media strategies to promote the Memorial’s exhibitions, initiatives, events, and programs.

Prepare and edit a wide range of written content, including media releases, feature stories, briefing materials, and stakeholder communications.

Coordinate media interviews, support staff in media interactions, and oversee the management of visiting media and VIPs on site.

Monitor and analyse media coverage to assess how the Memorial’s key messages are received across news outlets and platforms.

Work closely with the social to ensure consistency between social media activity and broader media messaging.

Foster strong working relationships across the organisation and develop a sound understanding of the Memorial’s collection and strategic priorities.

Position Eligibility

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).

All applicants external to AWM that are offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a National Police Check, even if they currently hold a security clearance. The check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
