We have an ongoing opportunity available in the South Sydney Eastern Sydney Northern Sydney District

Location - Strawberry Hills - South Sydney Eastern Sydney Northern Sydney District

Employment type - Ongoing

Salary - $125,693.00 to $129,228.00 pa + Superannuation and annual leave loading

This position is open to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only

Your role

In this challenging yet rewarding role, you will lead and supervise a team of Aboriginal caseworkers and work in collaboration with stakeholders to improve family functioning by providing services to vulnerable children, young people, and families.

What you'll do

You will manage, mentor and support these caseworkers in varied and possibly challenging circumstances. With your team you will improve outcomes for vulnerable Aboriginal children and their families, so we need your knowledge & experience to do this.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • provide an Aboriginal perspective and advocate on behalf of Aboriginal people in the local communities.
  • improve services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children, young people and families with a particular focus on preservation and restoration.
  • build strong relationships with partner agencies both within the sector as well as other government agencies to support and strengthen families and cultural connections.
  • use your cultural knowledge to help inform and shape service delivery.
  • improve outcomes for vulnerable Aboriginal children and their families by using the SDM Restoration process and other tools to restore Aboriginal children to their families.
  • empower your team to provide for the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children through Aboriginal consultation, family finding, genealogy, cultural planning and other support services as required.

What we're looking for

  • experience in applying best practice casework with children, young people and their families
  • experience in leading and managing a team
  • demonstrated understanding of setting up new processes and systems;
  • confirmation of Aboriginality
  • the ability to develop knowledge and links within the local communities
  • a valid driver's licence

Note: one of these requirements must articulate how the role works for the benefit of the Identified communities. For Aboriginal roles, it must also include what kind of cultural capability it therefore requires.

As an Identified role, this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, Australia's First Nations people.

For Aboriginal roles only also have: Where a position is identified, an applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification under the exception in Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

Where the role is a combination of identifications (e.g. Aboriginal female youth) then use all relevant ADA section references together.

Then, for Aboriginal Identified roles only:

There are two alternatives to confirming your Aboriginality, one of which must be uploaded to be considered for the role as follows. Either will be accepted:

Confirmation of Aboriginality form

or

Written confirmation from 2-3 Aboriginal organisations within the community in which you live/work, which addresses the three criteria listed below:

  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

  • Targeted Question 2 Please describe a time you identified a culturally significant issue affecting an Aboriginal child or family, and how you worked with caseworkers and community to develop a solution that upheld cultural values while meeting statutory requirements and policy/mandates. How did you manage your own emotions or any challenges that arose during this process'?
