About the ACT Education Directorate

We deliver public education for children and young people in the ACT. Our mission is to offer excellent, fair and equitable education. We want all students to feel safe, valued and supported to thrive.

Our 6 flexible education settings help empower young people facing challenges – whether health, mental health, justice involvement, or other complex needs. In each setting, we work closely with students to create personalised learning, wellbeing and transition goals – helping them to build sustainable pathways for the future. Our settings include:

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Murrumbidgee School – Located within Bimberi Youth Justice Centre, this school delivers educational and training to young people in custody or recently released, helping them re-engage and rebuild.

Hospital School – Based at Canberra Hospital, this setting supports children and young people, or have family receiving care, so they can continue learning during challenging times.

The Cottage – A day program run by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, supporting students with moderate to severe mental health challenges that impact school attendance.

Muliyan – A voluntary transitional program for years 7-10 students who need complex and intensive support to re-engage with learning.

Waruga Yardhura – Supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are not enrolled or regularly attending school, helping them reconnect with education.

​​​​​​​Distance Education – Provides online learning for students with medical conditions, elite sporting commitments or other needs that cannot be met in a traditional school setting.

About the role:

As a teacher working in an ACT flexible education setting, you will

Create a safe, inclusive and collaborative learning environment, grounded in evidence-based best practice methods, to empower students to reach their potential.

Use student-centred practices to nurture each student’s unique growth, wellbeing and learning success.

Develop and equip students with the skills and confidence to succeed.

Help students connect with their learning goals.

Empower students to transition onto the next stage of their lives with confidence.

Support and respond to diverse student needs, ensuring every student feels valued and supported.

Foster positive relationships with students, colleagues and the wider community. s

What we’re looking for:

Qualifications and experience: A recognised tertiary teaching qualification and demonstrated experience working with students requiring complex and intensive support.

Passion for teaching: A genuine desire to see students thrive and succeed in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Adaptability and flexibility: An ability to build strong relationships with diverse learners, adapt teaching strategies to meet complex needs and work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams to support student success.

Eligibility requirements:

To apply, you must have:

A recognised 4-year full-time tertiary teaching qualification.

ACT Teacher Quality Institute Teacher Registration (or eligibility to apply).

Valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration (or eligibility to apply).

Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid working visa.

Experience working with students who require intensive support.
