The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.

Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

Broad Purpose of the Role

AHCSA’s Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Program works with Aboriginal health services and the broader health sector across South Australia to support the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs). The program’s objectives are to:

• Develop culturally appropriate health promotion activities aimed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at risk of STIs including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, HIV and Syphilis and on BBVs including hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

• Support Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in South Australia in strengthening control strategies to diminish the impact of STIs and BBVs through prevention, early detection and treatment including prioritising community engagement and community led responses.

The Senior Program Officer, Sexual and Reproductive Health (Senior Program Officer) is responsible for coordinating the planning, implementation and delivery of sexual health related components of the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Program. The role facilitates the ACCH sector’s transition towards an integrated approach to sexual and reproductive healthcare, ensuring that services related to contraception, pregnancy care, unplanned or unwanted pregnancies, STI care and cervical screening are managed in a coordinated, holistic way.

The position works closely with Member Services and other key partners to develop strategies for building integrated sexual and reproductive health services. It also provides ongoing support to Member Services and health services across various settings, embedding sexual and reproductive health into their practice with Aboriginal people. This is achieved through coordinating capability building, health promotion activities, and fostering collaboration to ensure culturally appropriate care is provided across the sector.

The Senior Program Officer is accountable to and reports to the Manager, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Blood Borne Viruses, and works closely with all members of the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Blood Borne Viruses Team and the Public Health Medical Officers. It also works collaboratively with all AHCSA staff, Member Services, program partners and other key stakeholders.

Information, Advice and Advocacy: Providing information and expert guidance on sexual and reproductive health matters and priorities for the ACCH sector

Essential Experience

Experience in the design and delivery of culturally safe and responsive Aboriginal public health programs, developed through collaboration with health professionals, services and community members.

Proven experience in the development and implementation of strategies for health promotion, disease prevention, and the reduction of health disparities within Aboriginal populations.

Experience in developing and maintaining effective networks, alliances and stakeholder relationships to support program delivery.

Experience in program evaluation and reporting, including analysis of data and outcomes to assess effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.

Experience in providing health promotion and prevention services to Aboriginal people within an ACCH organisation.
