Your Opportunity
Our goal is to provide a stable and supportive environment that fosters the holistic growth and recovery of each child and young person we serve at Kingston House. We are dedicated to supporting children and young people under 16 who are alone and at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Our program offers safe, stable medium to long-term accommodation in a nurturing, home-like environment for up to five eligible children and young people at a time.
This is an on-site position and as one of our terrific Therapeutic Residential Support Workers, you will focus on family restoration goals by working closely with children, young people, and their families to resolve conflicts, improve relationships, and enhance overall wellbeing and care. Services will be trauma-informed, child-safe, child-centred, flexible, therapeutic, and collaborative and will use a 'Care Team' approach.
This is a 24-hour service with a rotating roster; therefore, applicants MUST be available to work a mix of day, evening, overnight, weekend, and public holiday shifts as required.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Induct young people to the service, advising requirements, their rights, and responsibilities,
- Support the progress of the young person towards the achievement of their case plan and family/kin restoration goals.
- Build positive working relationships with the young people based on honesty and trust, endeavouring to understand and interpret their behaviour, thus influencing positive attitudinal and behavioural change.
- Provide guidance and education to maintain satisfactory standards of personal care, hygiene, and grooming.
- Educate and develop menus to ensure they are nutritious and varied, and that the special dietary needs of individual Kingston residents are met.
- Proactively raise concerns about any issues that affect the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
- Collaborate with the team in the care and management of youth at risk.
- Assist young people through brief therapeutic intervention and referral to suitable services.
- Create and maintain internal and external client related paperwork including individualised electronic case management files in line with Mission Australia protocols.
Requirements for Success
- Relevant qualification in youth, social work, human services or equivalent
- Experience in residential accommodation facilities, youth work, Homeless or Human Services community services or equivalent.
- Expertise providing person-centred strength-based/goal-based planning, and information and referral services.
- Ability to engage and provide support to young people experiencing risk factors in their life This will require perseverance, flexibility, and innovation.
- Professional approach to the role including maintaining professional boundaries.
- A positive and person-centred approach with a strong guiding belief about everyone's capacity to self-right and grow within and beyond their current circumstances.
- Inventiveness in bringing projects and activities to life for disengaged youth
- Action oriented and accountable to achieve results in line with set timeframes.
- Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and complexity.
- Full driver licence with no restrictions
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
