The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago. The ALC is a ‘future-forward’ Land Council, directed by the 14 clans of the Groote Archipelago region, enabling the Anindilyakwa people to take full advantage of the opportunities and technology available in the 21st century, while simultaneously preserving land, language and culture.

Create pathways for youth to stand in both worlds.
About the role:
The ALC is seeking a highly capable and culturally attuned Corporate Affairs and Legal Manager to join its executive team. Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Chairperson, this role will guide and support the delivery of ambitious, community-driven outcomes economic, cultural and legislative that have been built on decades of consultation, planning and self-determined vision. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a progressive policy reform agenda while honouring the rights, voices and aspirations of Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago.
Please note: This position is based in Darwin, Cairns or Groote Eylandt and is required to travel to the Groote Eylandt Archipelago regularly and other locations including, Cairns, Canberra and as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide strategic and legal advice to the CEO, Chairperson, and Board, especially relating to the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976 (Cth) and Native Title Act 1993
Liaise with senior legal counsel, Ministers across all levels of government, and independent business and financial advisors
Coordinate complex projects, oversee the implementation of board decisions, and manage corporate governance processes
Prepare executive briefings, documentation, agendas, and speaking notes for high-level government and stakeholder engagement
Deliver sophisticated executive support to the CEO and Chairperson across legal, strategic and policy matters
Represent the ALC in key meetings and negotiations as required
Lead delivery of the ALC’s strategic communications plan in line with cultural and organisational priorities
Manage internal procedures for complaints, Whistleblower protections, and conflict-of-interest disclosures
Coordinate and collaborate with Northern Territory Land Councils and partner organisations on joint initiatives including ABA reform and Indigenous-led economic development
Supervise and delegate tasks to team members, ensuring strong project delivery and collaboration
Record and distribute accurate, timely board meeting minutes and support the delivery of board actions
Provide leadership in bridging traditional language-first communities with national and global economic opportunities
Selection Criteria:
A degree in Law, Public Relations, Communications, Political or Social Science, or related field
Demonstrated understanding of the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976 (Cth) and Native Title Act 1993
Significant experience in corporate affairs, public or government relations
Experience liaising with senior legal counsel, Ministers, NGOs and corporate advisors
Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes in applied settings
Proven ability to work independently and contribute innovative, progressive ideas within a team
Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
High-level organisational ability and professional discretion
A genuine desire to improve on-the-ground outcomes for Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago
Flexibility and resilience to work and travel in a fast-paced, changing environment
Desirable:
Previous experience working within an Indigenous organisation
What we Offer:
Salary: $140,000 per annum
Annual leave: 5 weeks per annum
Personal leave: 18 days per annum
Salary Sacrifice available (up to $18,500 per year)
2 weeks paid Christmas/New Year shut down - in addition to annual leave
