Mimal Land Management

The Business
Our country is a living landscape – our culture, heritage, laws and language are linked to the land.
In November 2022, Mimal Land Management submitted its Indigenous Protected Area management plan to the Federal Government. It’s the final step before the government considers Mimal’s proposal to declare an IPA across 18,300 square kilometres in south-central Arnhem Land.
It was developed through in-depth consultation with more than 20 clan groups who collaborated with Indigenous rangers, researchers, and scientists to map and prioritise Mimal’s environmental and cultural assets, identify threats and outline ways to manage them.
The area’s natural and cultural assets are managed by Mimal Rangers on behalf of and in cooperation with landowners and custodians.
Under an established Healthy Country Plan, the rangers manage land, water and fire, and conduct wildlife protection, monitoring and revegetation programs, weed and feral animal control, and carry out rock art, cultural history and language projects, and learning on country education programs with school children.
The Opportunity
The MERI Manager will lead the delivery of our Healthy Country Plan. This role will design and implement systems to monitor, evaluate, and report on land management outcomes, working closely with Traditional Owners, rangers, and partners. The MERI Manager will facilitate on-Country planning, support board reporting, and strengthen internal capability while identifying strategic gaps and partnership opportunities. This position offers a unique opportunity to support Indigenous-led conservation through strong systems, clear communication, and trusted relationships.
About You
An experienced Ecologist, conservation planner or land management professional with a solid grasp of monitoring and evaluation in natural and cultural landscapes
Drawn to work that supports Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and long-term care for Country — not just as a collaborator, but as an advocate for genuine partnership
Skilled in developing MERI systems, but grounded in the understanding that good planning starts with listening, trust, and strong relationships
At ease presenting to boards or funders, and just as comfortable sitting around a fire with rangers, talking through seasonal goals and what’s working on the ground
Able to turn complex ecological data or strategic frameworks into something clear, useful, and motivating for teams on Country
Energised by variety — whether it’s remote travel, hands-on project delivery, or refining big-picture systems back at base
Looking for work that’s meaningful, grounded in community, and makes a tangible difference to people, culture, and place
Your Reward
Competitive Salary: $105,000 – $115,000 plus 12.5% superannuation
Additional Benefits: Generous Salary Sacrifice options and 6 weeks annual leave per annum
Flexible Working: Mix of office-based, remote, and on-Country work with travel approximately once per month
Meaningful Impact: Be part of a respected Aboriginal-led organisation making a real difference for people and Country
Professional Growth: Work alongside experienced Traditional Owners, rangers, ecologists, and land management professionals
