Details: The position is responsible for providing effective trauma informed interventions for students and families, across Flexible Education. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Student Family Engagement Officer will also identify, develop and implement community development and wellbeing initiatives that work to strengthen the educational outcomes for students. This position will work directly with students and families, which could involve completing outreach in settings such as homes, schools and community.

Flexible Education is a community of schools and programs that are co-located within several settings including Murrumbidgee School (located in Bimberi Youth Detention Centre), Muliyan, The Hospital School, the educational program at The Cottage, Waruga Yardhura and Distance Education. Flexible Education provides holistic educational and wellbeing services to students and families with complex and challenging needs. To ensure that the holistic needs of students and families are met Flexible Education has a strong commitment to working together with community agencies, lead workers, families and each student.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

ASO6 Classification

  • Currents drivers’ licence is essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Trauma Informed Practice
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and working with young people
  • Access to personal vehicle is desirable.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of the social and economic issues affecting children, young people and their families within the ACT Government.
  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra

HP3 Qualification

Essential qualifications and experience for the Health Professional Level 3:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work
  • Current professional registration:
  • Social worker membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers or eligibility for membership
  • At least three years post qualification experience in a relevant field of case management working with children and families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Trauma Informed Practice
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and working with young people
  • Currents drivers’ licence is essential.
  • Access to personal vehicle is desirable.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of the social and economic issues affecting children, young people and their families within the ACT Government.

Note: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of up to 12 months, with the possibility of permanency. This position will be filled at the ASO6 or HP3 classification, dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
