Your new company
This is a well-known Australian Trade Union who are looking to develop their finance team with the appointment of an experienced Accountant / Finance Officer to join their experienced team. The organisation are based in the Melbourne CBD, and are a reputable and recognisable business.
Your new role
This is a varied and mixed finance position, covering financial and management accounting, AP and AR, and some payroll matters for the organisation. You will be required to deputise as the payroll and finance manager when required, along with develop relationships with wider internal and external stakeholders across the organisation. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Performing month-and year-end procedures, such as ensuring journals, reconciliations and reports are conducted accurately and within set deadlines.
- Manage fixed asset processing, along with accounts receivable operations and invoicing.
- Assist and conduct statutory accounting requirements alongside the finance manager.
- Manage payroll when required along with monitoring and processing staff expenses confidentially.
- Support and coordinate the payroll function when required, including managing PAYG, taxes and superannuation benefits for employees.
- Handle BAS statements and FBT returns when required.
- Supporting the growth and further development of the union by offering suggestions for process improvement and work streamlining.
- Understanding new legislation in relation to union regulations and government guidance, with an ability to communicate this to the wider team and business.
What you'll need to succeed
This role is ideal for someone who is looking to take on a broad finance role within a well-regarded and established organisation. You will have proven experience in management and financial accounting, with a solid understanding of AP and AR processes, and an eagerness to further progress in your career. In order to be considered for the role, you will have:
- An accounting qualification, such as a CPA or CA, and ideally a professional degree from a university. Alternatively, you will currently be studying for your CPA or CA qualifications.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar financial accountant or finance officer role, ideally gained within a reputable business.
- Proven knowledge and understanding of financial and management accounting, and ideally experience in AP, AR and payroll too.
- Strong commercial acumen, with an ability to drive process improvement and identify further ways for organisational growth.
- Understanding of financial systems, and a good knowledge of using Microsoft Office.
- Reliability, and being able to deputise for senior colleagues whilst they are absent.
- Strong communication skills, and able to build strong internal and external relationships across the organisation, whilst being confident in presenting and reporting to C-Suite level executives.
- An eagerness to complete work to a high standard, with a view to progressing in your career and gaining further knowledge and understanding of the business.

The company is looking to offer a salary of $105,000, plus 11.5% superannuation for this role, with some flexibility based on your experience within this area and industry-specific knowledge.
