Payroll Officer
MAYDAY is thrilled to be partnering with a leading luxury retail brand in the search for a Payroll superstar to support their end-to-end payroll function. Based in their beautiful Surry Hills HQ, this is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative payroll team of two, where you'll play a key role in managing the full payroll process in a fast-paced, fashion-forward environment.
What’s in it for you?
- Location: Surry Hills – just steps from public transport and surrounded by some of the best coffee spots in Sydney
- Contract: 3-month role with strong potential to extend – supporting the team while they recruit permanently
- Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (in-office) – with potential for 1-day WFH once you're settled in
- Industry: An exciting chance to work with a luxury fashion brand, perfect for anyone looking to get a foot in the door with a premium label
- Culture: Join a tight-knit, incredibly supportive team where people genuinely look after each other
- Team Setup: You'll be part of a team of two, so you won’t be managing payroll alone – strong collaboration and shared responsibility
- Start Date: Monday, 16th June – ready to hit the ground running
- Rate: $40–$46 per hour, depending on experience
Role:
- Own the end-to-end payroll process for all employees on a weekly basis, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality at every step
- Calculate and process statutory deductions (e.g. tax, superannuation, pensions) with precision, ensuring full compliance and on-time submissions
- Maintain up-to-date employee payroll records, including new hires, terminations, promotions, and changes to pay or entitlements
- Validate and manage timesheet data, ensuring accurate tracking of hours worked, leave accruals, and entitlements across the business
- Generate and distribute payslips and payroll documentation in a timely and professional manner
- Act as the first point of contact for payroll-related queries, providing clear and helpful support on pay, tax, and leave matters
- Stay ahead of compliance requirements, ensuring payroll practices align with relevant awards, enterprise agreements, and legislation (e.g. GRIA)
- Assist with audits and reporting, preparing accurate payroll data and documentation to support internal and external compliance checks
Ideal Candidate:
- Hands-on Payroll Expertise: Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll processing in-house. You’ll know what it takes to get it done right, from data entry to final submission.
- Industry Knowledge: Ideally, you've worked in retail or hospitality, so you're familiar with the complexities of Award interpretation – especially the General Retail Industry Award (GRIA).
- High-Frequency Pay Cycles: Experience working within weekly or fortnightly pay runs. You understand the fast-paced rhythm and attention to detail this requires.
- Payroll Systems Proficiency: Comfortable using modern payroll platforms (experience with Dayforce is a bonus, but not essential).
- You’ve worked with systems and understand the importance of accuracy and compliance.
- Tech-Savvy Communicator: Strong communication skills and a knack for using tech to streamline tasks.
- Advanced Excel skills are a must – you’ll need to confidently work with data, formulas, and reporting tools.
