The Opportunity
The Alfred Research Alliance (ARA) is a vibrant collaborative community in Melbourne, dedicated to excellence in medical research and education. The precinct operates an Animal facility called AMREP AS Pty Ltd (AAS), a subsidiary of Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (Baker Institute) located on the Alfred Hospital Precinct in Prahran.
We have an exciting opportunity available for an Animal Technician AT Level 4 to join our AMREP AS Pty Ltd Animal House Team.
As an Animal Technician you will report to the Area Supervisor and work as part of a team in the Animal Production & Experimental areas and be responsible for undertaking all tasks associated with animal maintenance, care and husbandry within the facility. You will also be involved in helping with Procedural and core facility operations.
This is a great opportunity for anyone currently working in an Animal Technician role who is looking for a position where they can grow their experience and be part of a developing team.
Please note that some weekend work and work on Public holidays is required.
What will you bring?
You will have:
A Diploma of Animal Technology and relevant work experience as an Animal Technician or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience in the field Animal Technology.
Previous experience in Animal husbandry, breeding colonies and production, particularly in rodents (Rats and mice).
Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to animal care in a laboratory setting.
Ability to assist in experimental procedures along with general knowledge of procedures areas.
Technical skills including handling, gavage and injections preferred.
Ability to follow and use SOPs and relevant documents when completing tasks.
Knowledge of AEC documents, requirements and procedures and familiarity with relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines including the Code of practice for the care and use of animals for Scientific purposes.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with externals in consultation with Supervisors.
Excellent computer skills (including word, excel and access database).
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Initiative with the ability to trouble shoot and work with others to develop solutions to problems that arise.
Ability to contribute positively to the day to day efficient functioning of activities in a team environment.
Our ideal candidate has previous experience in the industry/related discipline, is an enthusiastic, motivated individual who can work individually and collaboratively as part of a team, with a strong passion for research animals and their care and a commitment to further developing their skills and experiences in a research facility setting.
