Position Title: Mechanical Laboratory Technician
Department: Quality Assurance / Product Development
Reports To: GM (Engineering & Product development) / QC & Technical Services Officer
Location: Dandenong South
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: $65k - $77k.
Position Summary:
The Mechanical Laboratory Technician supports product development, quality control, and compliance testing for construction materials and products. This role involves hands-on mechanical testing, precise documentation, and collaboration with engineering and QC teams to ensure products meet internal and industry performance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct mechanical and physical tests on construction materials and products (e.g., metallurgical testing, product installation, load testing, tool repairs, tool functionality testing, prototype testing)
Prepare and condition samples for testing in accordance with relevant standards
Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as Instron machine, hardness tester, pullout machines and equipment calibration machine.
Accurately record and analyse test results; generate detailed reports for engineering and quality assurance teams
Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions related to product failures or quality concerns
Maintain calibration records and ensure lab equipment is functioning correctly
Support new product trials and prototyping through mechanical testing and feedback
Ensure compliance with internal quality protocols and industry regulations
Follow all safety policies and maintain a clean, organized lab environment
Required Qualifications:
1–3 years of experience in a lab or technical role, preferably in construction product testing or manufacturing
Familiarity with mechanical testing standards (e.g. AS 5216, AS 3566.1&2)
Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with lab tools and instruments
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, product specs, and testing procedures
Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel for data analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with construction materials such as concrete, steel, cement, masonry, or structural components
Familiarity with quality control systems
Familiarity with technical drawings
Basic understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and root cause analysis
Experience with data acquisition systems or lab management software
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and handle samples or equipment up to 15kg
Comfortable working in a manufacturing/lab environment with exposure to dust, noise, and moderate temperatures
Standing, bending, and manual dexterity required for sample preparation and testing
