The work area
This role sits within the Financial Policy and Operations Directorate which is part of the Office of the Deputy Under Treasurer business unit. The Financial Policy and Operations directorate manages, administers, and provides advice on whole of government treasury operations, including cash flow management and liquidity, investment of the Public Bank Account , Consolidated Account Debt management. The directorate also provides advice in relation to the development, review, interpretation and application of the State’s Financial Management and Accountability Framework which includes the Financial Management Act 2006 and the enabling legislation of statutory authorities.
The opportunity
Are you passionate about shaping financial policy and providing expert legislative advice to support government decision-making? We are seeking a motivated and knowledgeable individual with strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of Australian Accounting Standards, and experience managing complex financial transactions to join our team and make a meaningful impact on financial governance in Western Australia.
As a Financial Policy Advisor, you will:
- Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, the Financial Management Act 2006, Treasurer’s Instructions, and other relevant legislation and regulations.
- Provide expert advice and strategic recommendations to senior management and government agencies on financial policy issues, complex transactions, internal controls, and compliance matters to support effective governance and accurate financial reporting.
- Build financial capability across the sector by developing and delivering training content through forums, seminars, and webinars, ensuring agency staff are well-versed in financial policies and standards.

About Department of Treasury WA
The Department of Treasury consists of two businesses – Treasury, and Strategic Projects and Asset Sales.
The Treasury business provides economic and financial management and advice to Government. This includes the formulation, implementation and monitoring throughout the year of the State Budget; economic and revenue forecasting; advice and analysis on financial arrangements with the Commonwealth; advice on infrastructure policy and planning; advice on the State’s financial management framework; and management of the Public Ledger.
Strategic Projects and Asset Sales manages the State Government's high-risk infrastructure projects by overseeing major non-residential building projects and pursuing optimum cost, time and quality outcomes. The projects assigned to the Department are typically greater than $100 million in value. In addition, Strategic Projects and Asset Sales has responsibility for the planning and delivery of the State’s asset sales program as determined by Government.
