Become a vital part of our childhood cancer research program in the Centre for Cancer Research, dedicated to improving outcomes for paediatric cancer patients. We leverage cutting-edge functional genomics and advanced cell line/organoid models to identify and validate new therapeutic strategies. We are looking for a dedicated Research Assistant to primarily support our pre-clinical research efforts with a focus on conducting in vivo mouse studies to evaluate growth of patient derived models and test the effectiveness of novel cancer therapies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Model Development & Maintenance:

Grow and manage paediatric cancer cell lines and organoids.

Develop patient derived xenograft models from children’s brain cancer samples.

Animal Colony Management:

Maintain, organize, and oversee mouse breeding colonies.

Pre-clinical Procedures:

Conduct regular mouse health monitoring (checks, weights, tumour volume assessment) per ethical guidelines.

Perform diverse specialized mouse techniques (e.g., subcutaneous, orthotopic brain, tail vein, intra-ventricular injections; cannula installation).

Strictly adhere to animal ethics guidelines during all procedures.

Ethics & Training:

Assist with the preparation of animal ethics submissions (with guidance).

Contribute to training new personnel in required mouse techniques.

Laboratory Support:

Maintain an organised and detailed lab book.

Support general lab organization and maintenance of shared spaces.

Communicate progress effectively through regular updates and meeting participation.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The role will suit someone who has:

Hands-on experience in in vivo mouse models

Competence in mouse handling, health monitoring and specialised procedures (essential)

Familiarity with in vivo imaging systems (IVIS) or other small animal imaging modalities for tracking tumour progression or therapeutic response (desirable)

Strong understanding of animal ethics protocols and a demonstrated ability to perform procedures in compliance with regulatory guidelines

Qualifications desired:

Degree level qualification or equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This position is a fixed term contract role in a full-time capacity. Salary is based on our Research Support Staff classification ranging from RSS W-Y dependent on level of experience. Superannuation of 11.5% and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
