As a Lead Family/Carer Peer Support Worker to join the Merri-bek Community Team at Northern Health (located in Coburg).

About Mental Health Division:

Northern Health is the third largest mental health service in Victoria Northern.

Within the Mental Health Division, we pride ourselves on providing high quality mental health services to people living in the northern regions of Melbourne, and work in a collaborative way with consumers and carers based on recovery principles.

We aim to provide strong clinical leadership to support all staff in the provision of professional treatment and care by our integrated community teams, inpatient, and residential services.


About the Role:

We provide a comprehensive range of psychiatric services to people who reside in the local government areas of Merri-bek and Hume.

The Community Team delivers intensive quality mental health services to adults experiencing serious mental illness and provides assessment, treatment and case management services within an integrated model.

We are an inclusive, innovative and supportive team who are dedicated to helping those with mental health issues and would love for a like-minded support worker to join us and help make a difference!

This role is an full time ongoing position.


In this role you will:

  • Support families/carers in their role in caring for someone with a mental illness, including helping them access the range of community supports they need
  • Encourage and engage with families/carers during their orientation to the service and improve their experience of care
  • Promote and help others to understand the effectiveness of the family/carer peer role and workforce in clinical mental health services.
  • Guide, orientate and mentor other Family/Carer Peer Workers within the team and potentially the wider service
  • Utilise your lived experience to provide expertise and guidance to other clinicians of the team who are providing support to families/carers

About you:

  • Previous experience in a Family/Carer Peer Support Role (preferably within public mental health)
  • A personal lived experience as a Family/Carer of someone with a diagnosed mental illness
  • Have a desire to connect, nurture and support the journey of other consumers so as to make it less lonely, gentle and reassuring;
  • Be a role model to other families/carers that inspires them to work at having the life they desire
  • Work alongside clinicians as an equal partner in providing real support to families/carers
  • Liaise with others and advocate regularly for the needs of families/carers
