SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation. We do this by undertaking a mix of responsive and proactive programs of work focused on high risk harms across all industries, aligned to our strategic plan and regulatory priorities.
SafeWork NSW is undergoing an exciting and important period of transformation as we establish the organisation as a modern, strong and standalone Work Health and Safety Regulator. We're seeking suitably qualified and experienced inspectors who are passionate about safety and the health and wellbeing of workers and their families.
About the role
The Team Coordinator provides supervision, operational support and quality assurance and will also conduct requests for service, incident investigations, prevention and response programs of work.
They:
- Coordinate, supervise and support a team of professionals that may include Inspectors, specialists, project officers and support staff.
- Provide team supervision and operational support in the office and the field to ensure services and decisions align with our strategic plan, regulatory priorities, legislation, policies and procedures, and customer service standards and are consistent, professional and responsive.
- Offer advice regarding safe work practices and how to comply with relevant work health and safety laws.
- Support the community and people of NSW by identifying emerging issues and industry trends and supporting implementation of prevention and response programs of work that address both physical and psychosocial harms and hazards.
- Build and maintain effective and professional working relationships with customers and stakeholders to improve WHS outcomes.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to team members, ensuring internal administrative and organisational requirements are completed.
- Deliver presentations, workshops, advisory services and forums.
- Contribute to a positive, supportive, and rewarding workplace.
Essential requirements
- Diploma in Government (Workplace Inspection) or equivalent or willingness to complete in the first 12 months
- Extensive demonstrated experience in WHS Inspection and compliance and holder of Inspector Authority
- Satisfactory criminal record check
- Satisfactory medical assessment capacity in regard to physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
- Regular travel throughout NSW with the occasional inter-state travel
- Employees are expected to hold a valid driver licence throughout employment
Appointment and ongoing assignment may be subject to restrictions and the satisfactory participation in mandatory pre-employment and ongoing probity screening, in accordance with relevant Legislation and/or related policies.
About the Teams
Construction
- Provide a strong and consistent focus on building industry capability through strategic and collaborative stakeholder management, evidence and risk-based harm prevention initiatives and a proportionate, targeted regulator response to construction incidents and requests for service.
Operations Metro
- Coordinate first response incidents provide admin, field support to Inspectors and conduct first responses when necessary.
- Review and coordinate unallocated requests for service and incidents to Inspectors and complete non-field responses for unallocated requests for service and incidents as necessary.
- Coordinate and provide support to Inspectors to manage industry relationships with industry stakeholders, health and safety representatives and unions.
- Undertake training as required to enable and support the team to exercise their authorities.
Dangerous Goods & Explosives
- The DG&E team is responsible for administering the WHS legislation, the Explosives legislation and some aspects of the Dangerous Goods (Road and Rail Transport) legislation. In the area of hazardous chemicals, the team regulates compliance for all schedule 11 manifest quantity workplaces (MQW) and potential major hazard facilities sites in NSW. Under the Explosives legislation the team is responsible for assessing, reviewing and making recommendations for licence applications made by individuals and businesses, this includes pyrotechnicians. The team also provides technical support to internal and external customers.
Major Hazard Facilities
- Five years or more experience as a Supervisor, Team Leader, Inspector or Officer with a regulatory authority (i.e. SafeWork, EPA, local Council or equivalent in another state) as need to hit the ground running.
- Three years or more relevant professional industry experience in a process safety environment.
- Experience with both the current Work Health and Safety and Explosives legislation.
- Equivalent relevant qualifications and experience in work health and safety and relevant industry experience i.e. the administration of regulatory frameworks.
Essential requirement
- As a whole of state role, the ideal person must have the ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours as regular travel throughout NSW with possible/occasional interstate travel is required.
Regulatory Engagement
- Lead a small, high-performing team in the design and delivery of industry-focused and emerging harm prevention programs, with oversight of governance, planning, reporting and evaluation activities.
- Provide strategic direction and expert advice to align team efforts with organisational priorities and regulatory goals.
- Demonstrate advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence, engage stakeholders and represent the team effectively.
- Apply a collaborative, outcome-oriented approach to problem solving, fostering innovation and continuous improvement in program delivery.
Response, Triage and Enforceable Undertakings
- Responsible for leading a team that undertakes assessment, validation, verification and audit functions.
- This role requires extensive experience managing such teams, along with a deep knowledge and awareness of the Enforceable Undertaking program.
- The ideal candidate will also possess knowledge and experience managing both Inspectors and project staff and demonstrate a proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
- The Team Coordinator will work closely with the entire Response, Triage and Enforceable Undertakings (RTEU) team to identify, plan and lead multidisciplinary work across these functions.
Risk, Assurance and Reviewable Decisions
- Experience as a safety inspector undertaking high quality, complex and professional investigations/enquiries into a wide variety of workplace issues.
- High level written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail with a comprehensive understanding of applicable legislation, policies and procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple work requirements in a highly complex and timely manner.
