SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. We are undergoing an exciting and important period of transformation as we establish the organisation as a modern, strong and standalone Work Health and Safety Regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation. We do this by undertaking a mix of responsive and proactive programs of work focused on high-risk harms across all industries, aligned to our strategic plan and regulatory priorities.

The NITP is an intensive program delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, in-class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks and extensive on-the-job field experience including regular travel throughout NSW for the duration of the training program.

About the role

SafeWork NSW Inspectors apply their industry knowledge, experience and training to work in partnership with NSW workplaces to assist them to meet and maintain work health and safety standards so that workers return home safely.

The Occupational Health and Environment team is responsible for:

  • Influencing state and national legislation, policies, standards, and guidance related to specialist harm prevention and regulation concerning occupational health, hygiene, ergonomics and the work environment
  • Designing, developing and implementing resources to assist duty holders to comply with legislative obligations including targeted, risk-based prevention strategies informed by research, data and intelligence
  • Building internal and external capability to reduce exposure to harmful substances through effective regulation, prevention, risk management and health monitoring
  • Providing expert support and assistance to operational inspectors in response to complex chemical matters, such as restricted and prohibited carcinogens, lead risk work, workplace exposure monitoring, health monitoring as well as advice on safety data sheets and labelling of hazardous chemicals.

About you

We are looking for a team player who is passionate about workplace safety, inclusion and diversity, is results focused and will actively contribute to a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement.

Our ideal candidate

  • Must have prior experience and interest working in an occupational health and environment role
  • Must hold a degree in occupational hygiene or science and be (or eligible for) professional membership with the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH).

Essential requirements

  • Willingness and ability to undertake work-related travel across NSW and occasionally inter-state, work from and stay in remote locations and work outside of usual business hours
  • Hold a current NSW 'C' class driver licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Undertake and achieve a satisfactory criminal record check
  • Undertake and achieve a satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
    Successfully complete the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP).

Appointment and ongoing assignment may be subject to restrictions and satisfactory participation in mandatory pre-employment and ongoing probity screening in accordance with relevant legislation and/or related policies.
