Company description:

Join us and be part of Victoria's Big Build, working within the award-winning Level Crossing Removal Project. We've already removed some of Victoria's most dangerous level crossings, and we're not stopping any time soon with work to last us until at least 2030. There has never been a better time to get amongst the action!

Job description:

About the role

Our Systems and Controls team is on the hunt for a Senior Cost Controller to join our Program Delivery Team, to be a part of Program Cost Control function on a complex, transformative infrastructure program. This role will be reporting to the Cost Planning Manager within the Project Controls Management branch of Systems & Controls Division. Key responsibilities include but not limited to cost forecasting, variance analysis and internal and external reporting of several major infrastructure projects.

The Senior Cost Controller (Program) will play an active role in the planning and delivery of Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP). A wide variety of Project based tasks will be required and the role will be responsible for ensuring LXRP is meeting ongoing internal and external reporting requirements to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

On a day-to-day basis, you will find yourself:

  • Maintain the Project Controls System to ensure data integrity and accurate reporting is provided in a timely manner. This includes managing the EcoSys reporting system to ensure data integrity.
  • Assist coordination of the Month End Cost Reporting Cycle for the Authority.
  • Assist preparation of various monthly reports including the LXRP Project Status Report
  • Ensure Cost Controllers in package delivery teams adhere to common standards and procedures.
  • Assist coordination of project cost control activities at a Program level, including allocating and time phasing budgets, reporting cost deviations, cash flow reporting, cost forecasting and change management.
  • Maintain the Work Breakdown Structure for the Authority.
  • Provide Cost Control support at a functional level across the Authority. This includes undertaking various critical tasks at short notice.
  • Coordinate with delivery Cost Controllers regular reviews of Program Alliance cost control processes and cost forecasts.
  • Assist with activities to ensure cost benchmark data is captured and centrally stored and managed.
  • Assist with creating custom, fit-for-purpose cost control reports to facilitate executive decision-making

This is a three (3) year fixed term position, paying a salary between $138,631 and $185,518 plus superannuation with hybrid working arrangements (a mix of office and home/remote based working). The office you will be working from is located in Melbourne CBD and you will also have the option to access flexible working arrangements if you need them - many LXRP employees work flexibly. The team's anchor day is Wednesday and you have the flexibility to choose your other office day (in consultation with your manager).

About you

You are someone that comes with a clear understanding and experience of cost control - preferably in a government or construction/infrastructure space. You might be working as a Cost Controller and looking for a step up in your current career!

Let's get technical - what skills do we expect you to have?

  • Good communicator, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to work autonomously and independently where needed but can jump in and help the team when required.
  • The ability to grasp complex technical issues, and their potential impact on budget/forecast - being able to "zoom-in" to the details or "zoom-out" for trends analysis etc. as needed.
  • Previous EcoSys and Unifier experience would be beneficial, though not essential.
  • Above average / advanced Excel skills would be beneficial and would add value to this role.
  • You can work under pressure and keep calm while doing so!

At LXRP we embrace diversity and inclusion. We actively strive to remove barriers and encourage applications from people of any age, or disability, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders, culturally and linguistically diverse or LGBTIQA+. We will make adjustments to our recruitment process to ensure that you are able to participate to the best of your ability.

At LXRP we're not only removing level crossings, but also removing barriers and creating a long lasting legacy for our communities.

Inclusion is a priority for us, and we are committed to creating an employee community that reflects those in which we work. We value diverse representation at all levels of the organisation.

As leaders in the transport sector, we provide secure pathways into the industry for:

  • Women
  • People who identify as LGBTQIA+
  • People living with a disability
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
  • Refugees or asylum seekers
  • People facing barriers to employment.

We offer and encourage flexible work and purchased leave arrangements for all employees to support wellbeing, family or carer commitments and other personal circumstances.

We also place great importance on professional development and growth through both formal training opportunities and lessons learnt.

Health, safety and wellbeing are at the heart of what we do. We aim to create a safe and healthy workplace for everyone, every day, everywhere.

What next?

To apply - just submit your CV.

No need to submit a separate address of the key selection criteria, and no need for a cover letter. Instead, we like to ask a couple of assessed questions in the application form to get to know you better outside of what is written on your CV.

In this instance the questions are:

  1. What is the main thing that stands out to you about this job, and has led you to apply? (Max 250 words)
  2. Describe for us what ‘Working Collaboratively' means to you and please outline an example of when you have successfully achieved this. (Max 200 words).
  3. How do you perceive "Change"? Describe a situation where you found yourself in an evolving situation be it in terms of your team or your current responsibilities. What was your approach and how did you navigate changes in that situation? (Max 250 words).

After assessing your CV and answers to the above questions, the next steps of the recruitment process might include:

  • a phone screen to learn more about you, and you to learn more about us
  • an interview to understand more about things you have worked on in the past
  • a practical activity where you can showcase your skills and potential

Please note: the successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which include national police checks and misconduct screening.

About Level Crossing Removal Project

Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Over the next eight years the Level Crossing Removal Authority will oversee the removal of 50 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne.

The Victorian Government allocated $2.4 billion in its 2015-16 budget to remove at least 20 level crossings by 2018. These sites form the basis of a long-term strategic plan being developed to remove all 50 level crossings by 2022.

Construction has already commenced on several sites, and planning and early consultation is underway for the delivery of the entire project.

Removing the crossings will:

deliver significant safety improvements for drivers and pedestrians

improve travel around Melbourne – whether you're a train user, pedestrian, cyclist or driver

get people home safer and faster

make our roads more reliable, enabling people to better predict their travel times

stimulate economic growth by creating thousands of jobs during construction

revitalise local communities, with many areas benefiting from station rebuilds

enable more trains to run more often and on time.
