Live-in Builder - Lindeman Island

About the Opportunity:

An exciting and unique opportunity exists for a highly skilled and adaptable Trade Qualified Builder to live and work on picturesque Lindeman Island, Queensland. This live-in role offers a rare chance to combine your passion for construction with an idyllic island lifestyle, contributing directly to the ongoing development and maintenance of our island facilities.

Position Title: Carpenter / Builder

Location: Lindeman Island, Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia

Reporting To: Construction Manager/Chief Engineer

Probation Period: 6 Months

Salary: $110K + Superannuation

Role Overview:

We are seeking a versatile builder with extensive hands-on experience across a broad spectrum of construction disciplines. The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking a wide variety of building projects, from minor repairs and maintenance to new construction, across residential, commercial, and infrastructure assets on the island. Due to the remote nature of the location, a proactive approach, problem-solving skills, and a strong work ethic are paramount.

Key Responsibilities:

Construction & Renovation: Execute a diverse range of building projects from inception to completion, including new builds, renovations, extensions, and structural repairs.

Concrete Works: Proficiently manage all aspects of concrete construction, including formwork, rebar placement, pouring, finishing, and curing for slabs, footings, pathways, and other structural elements.

Steel Construction: Fabricate, erect, and install steel structures, including frames, beams, and roofing, ensuring adherence to engineering specifications and safety standards.

Wood Construction: Undertake all aspects of timber framing, carpentry, decking, cladding, and joinery, demonstrating high-quality craftsmanship.

Maintenance & Repairs: Conduct routine and reactive maintenance on existing buildings and infrastructure, identifying and rectifying issues promptly and efficiently.

Compliance: Ensure all building activities strictly adhere to current Australian Standards (AS) and the National Construction Code (NCC), maintaining accurate records and documentation.

Project Management (Minor): Manage small to medium-sized projects independently, including material ordering, scheduling, and coordination with other island staff as required.

Safety: Adhere to all WHS policies and procedures, promoting a safe working environment for yourself and others.

Adaptability: Be willing and able to undertake any type of project, from minor repairs to significant new constructions, demonstrating a flexible and resourceful approach.

Remote Work: Successfully operate in a remote island environment, managing resources effectively and being prepared for varying logistical challenges.

Qualifications & Experience:

Trade Qualification: Hold a current and recognised Australian Building Trade Qualification (e.g., Certificate III in Carpentry, Certificate III in Bricklaying/Block laying, etc., or equivalent).

Demonstrated Experience: Minimum of 5 years post-apprenticeship experience in the building and construction industry.

Concrete Expertise: Proven hands-on experience in all facets of concrete work, including formwork, reinforcement, pouring, and finishing.

Steel Construction Expertise: Demonstrated experience in steel fabrication, erection, and installation.

Wood Construction Expertise: Extensive experience in carpentry, timber framing, and general wood construction.

Australian Standards: Thorough knowledge and understanding of current Australian Building Standards (AS) and the National Construction Code (NCC).

Licensing: Relevant Australian construction licenses and certifications as required by law.

Valid Driver's License: Current and valid Australian Driver's License.

Strong Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with management and other island staff.

Safety Conscious: A strong commitment to workplace health and safety.

Physical Fitness: Physically fit and able to perform manual labour in varying weather conditions.

Team Player: While working independently, also able to collaborate effectively with a small island team when required.

Positive Attitude: A positive and resilient approach to living and working in a remote island community.

Experience:

· Minimum 5 years’ experience as a qualified tradesperson.

· Minimum of at least four major projects managed by the individual themselves demonstrating the ability to manage and complete projects.

· Ability to read and understand plans and technical drawings and details and translate these into reality.

· Management of building crews and teams of at least 10 personnel.

· Management of material ordering and utilisation.

· QA/QC management and experience.

· Solid comprehension of all trade areas associated with construction and refurbishment of buildings and structures.

· Current 'C' class Driver's Licence.

· Demonstrated experience within the maintenance industry.

· Current CPR/LVR certification.

· Construction White Card.

· Able to work with minimal supervision.

· 5 + years’ experience in a Field Service Role or similar is desirable.

· Proven ability to undertake review and provide guidance on problem solving and challenging construction conditions.
