About The Position

The University Veterinarian and Senior Animal Welfare Officer ensures high standards of animal welfare in research and teaching at RMIT. This role focuses on developing and delivering the program of veterinary care at RMIT, along with providing expert advice on best practice animal welfare to stakeholders including researchers, technical services staff, and the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). They also support education and training, and governance related activities to ensure awareness, understanding and compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals, relevant legislation, and RMIT policies.

The position requires a collaborative and proactive approach, liaising internally and externally with government bodies and various teams, including the Senior Manager of Research Ethics, Integrity and Governance and the Senior Manager of Bioresources and Biosafety. Given the evolving nature of animal welfare, the role demands continuous learning, problem-solving, and strong leadership and communication skills.

This is a key role within a high performing team with a shared goal of supporting RMIT researchers in the conduct of ethical, responsible and excellent research, and a positive culture of care and service excellence.

Please note that after-hours and weekend on-call support may be required as part of this role to ensure continued service availability.

Qualifications: A degree in Veterinary Science.

Registration with or eligibility for registration with the appropriate Regulatory Board in Victoria (currently the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria).

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

  • Relevant Veterinary experience in clinical practice and/or research environments, along with a current Victorian Veterinarian Registration.
  • Demonstrable commitment to animal welfare, with a deep knowledge and understanding of relevant Codes, legislation and regulations, as well as an empathetic understanding of laboratory animal science for the management of laboratory animals and animal facilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to act sensitively and diplomatically. Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled by this position, the demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to use discretion wisely is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills with the ability to relate well to staff at all levels as well as external parties, and a preparedness to proactively engage with stakeholders to negotiate complex and contentious issues and achieve timely and appropriate resolution.
  • A demonstrated ability to proactively identify issues, trends, and imperatives with respect to animal welfare, ethics and governance and to make recommendations for ensuring compliance and continuous improvement, including improved policy, procedures and practices.
  • Experience and interest in coordinating and, where appropriate, delivering professional training and education in the field of laboratory animal science and animal welfare, including maintaining appropriate records.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and collaborate, as well as to work autonomously, with an emphasis on professional excellence and continuous improvement.
