SCB Legal is a boutique law firm with an established team of highly qualified and experienced professionals based in Penrith. We cover a wide spectrum of criminal law cases, in all levels of the court system, across NSW and sometimes interstate.
SCB Legal have an exciting opportunity available and are currently looking for a highly motivated and experienced Criminal Lawyer to become a long-term member of our respected team.
We offer the opportunity to work in a firm where you will have the ability to manage your files independently, whilst also having the benefit of exposure to other areas of law.
This position will be based in Penrith.
The Role
You will work alongside our experienced criminal lawyers and collaborative team, who will provide guidance and support to allow you to grow your professional skills and capabilities in building a thriving practice.
We provide the highest quality of legal services for each and every client from all walks of life. There is a high volume of work and the pressure can be intense.
The successful candidate will be appearing in Court on a wide range of matters and must have excellent advocacy skills. You will be required to hit the ground running including representing clients at defended hearings, conducting client conferences, providing advice, taking statements and negotiating with the prosecution, whilst communicating effectively and having a strong work ethic.
The Successful Candidate
LLB and current practising certificate
Minimum of 2-3+ years post-admission experience in criminal law
Proven track record for achieving exceptional results for clients
Regularly attend and appear in the Local Court, Children's Court, District Courts and as directed, appearing in the Higher Courts;
Experience as an advocate in licence appeals, sentences, section 14 hearings, ADVO applications, defended and disputed facts hearings, severity and all grounds appeals, and bail including Supreme Court bail applications
A comprehensive understanding of NSW and Commonwealth criminal law practice and procedure, including requirements under practice notes
Skilled at managing client needs and expectations throughout the course of their matter
Must have experience working with some of the most vulnerable people and have an awareness and working knowledge of mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction and trauma
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
Must work well under pressure and be able to quickly manage a caseload and provide high quality legal advice and representation
Must be willing to adapt and learn
NSW driver licence and access to a vehicle for court attendances
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including but not limited to correspondence, providing independent advice, court documents and preparing briefs for counsel
Attention to detail
Liaise with other stakeholders including the prosecution (both DPP and police prosecutors), other legal representatives, corrections staff and court staff
Desirable - family law, conveyancing and estates experience
