Your role
As the Senior Scientist you will:
• Contribute to the research, planning, development, implementation and continuous improvement of methods and standards for understanding soil, catchment and riverine processes, landscape monitoring programs and other related variables.
• Develop and undertake data analysis, when required, using a range of geospatial and statistical techniques.
• Supervise and mentor staff for supporting of soil, catchment and riverine processes work program, including geo-spatial and statistical techniques, as required. This will include development and review of work and for team members; providing support for professional and personal development.
• Develop and deliver timely and high quality, scientifically defensible products, publications and reporting tools that include quantitative and statistical analysis and/or visualisation of data and results.
• Work closely with key research, technical and policy staff and collaborators to further develop soil, catchment and riverine processes science to ensure products meet client and stakeholder needs.
• When required, represent DETSI in professional and scientific forums related to soil, catchment and riverine processes, and provide advice as required to Soil and Catchment Science managers, other government partners, industry, and the general public.
• Communicate and translate scientific information effectively to a range of audiences using a variety of media.
• Contribute to high quality data management and data publishing for the program and provide supporting advice and documentation to a range of stakeholders.
• Establish and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships with internal and external clients and a range of stakeholders relevant to the work program.
• Support and utilise the governance policy and procedure, systems activities, and processes within the work unit to fulfil all obligations under legislation including the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and the Financial Accountability Act 2009.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

What we are looking for
This position requires:
• Demonstrated contemporary knowledge and understanding of soil, catchment and riverine processes including nutrient management and landscape function science and the principles of river and landscape monitoring programs to support government.
• Demonstrated scientific research and development skills to produce, continuously improve and deliver research projects, as well as the ability to think strategically to solve problems, take responsibility for organising and conducting field work, undertake data analysis, synthesise results and deliver within agreed timeframes, and effectively communicate to a range of audiences.
• Proven skills in project development and delivery to meet customer and/or project partner requirements, and demonstrated adaptability, flexibility and ability to take the initiative to progress work when required.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise, support, and mentor scientific staff in a team environment, identifying areas for development, and encouraging staff to engage in development opportunities.
• Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships, engage, and communicate with a range of customers and partners, and professionally represent the Department and its interests.
• Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
